We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Project Accountant to manage the financial operations of a large-scale casino construction project in Bakersfield, California. This role is responsible for overseeing project-level accounting, cost controls, financial reporting, and compliance throughout the lifecycle of the build. The ideal candidate has strong construction accounting experience, understands complex project environments, and is comfortable working closely with project managers, contractors, and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities- Manage all project-related accounting activities for the casino construction project
- Track, analyze, and report on project costs, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow
- Prepare monthly job cost reports, cost-to-complete analyses, and variance explanations
- Maintain accurate general ledger entries related to the project
- Review and process journal entries, accruals, and adjustments
- Assist in developing and maintaining project budgets and financial forecasts
- Monitor actual costs against budget and flag potential overruns or risks
- Review change orders for financial accuracy and budget impact
- Support value engineering and cost optimization initiatives
- Review and process contractor and subcontractor pay applications
- Ensure compliance with contract terms, retainage requirements, and lien laws
- Coordinate with project managers to verify work completed
- Manage vendor invoices, payment schedules, and reconciliations
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies
- Support audits, including internal, external, and regulatory audits
- Maintain proper documentation for audit trails and regulatory requirements
- Assist with compliance related to gaming, construction, and local/state regulations as applicable
- Partner closely with project managers, executives, and operations teams
- Provide financial insights to support decision-making throughout the project
- Coordinate with external partners such as lenders, auditors, and consultants
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in construction or project accounting
- Strong understanding of job cost accounting and cost-to-complete methodologies
- Experience with large, complex construction projects
- Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Excel skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with casino, hospitality, or large commercial construction projects
- CPA or CMA designation
- Familiarity with construction management or ERP systems (e.g., Sage, Procore, Viewpoint, or similar)
- Knowledge of California construction regulations and lien laws
