Truancy Reduction Specialist
This position requires knowledge of attendance record keeping methods and techniques;
English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; word processing techniques and computer software applications; school/district attendance and tardy policies and definitions; the Spanish language. Must possess the skill to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms in both Spanish and English; understand and follow oral and written instructions; learn and apply District rules, regulations and policies; effectively maintain record keeping systems and files in a timely manner;
prepare reports and correspondence; type/word process accurately at a rate required for successful job performance; operate standard office equipment including computer terminal, copy machine, typewriter; perform accurate mathematical calculations using basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Must possess the ability to interpret and translate in Spanish;
communicate orally and in writing in Spanish; prepares weekly truancy reports required to succeed in reducing truancy; prepare call slips and admit slips for students and receives students and parents in the office; help keep accurate school attendance and truancy records showing attendance of each student by school period; supervise students assisting in truancy reduction; check with parents to verify absences;
record and clear student absences and truancies on school forms and contracts, and on the Synergy system; report patterns of attendance problems to counselors and administrators; remind students to bring written excuses for absences and follow up to insure that written excuses are received and absences are cleared; counsel students as to reasons for truancy, compulsory attendance laws, and the Kern High School District Truancy Reduction Program;
confer with District office regarding truancy reduction policies and procedures; prepares, records, and maintains STEP contracts and maintains student STEP files; record students STEPS and other pertinent information on the Synergy System; meet regularly with school truancy team to identify and correct problems in the Truancy Reduction Program; make home visits to counsel students/parents where truancy is an issue (with counselor, probation officer, police officer and/or Dean);
assist with various clerical duties within the school office when necessary and as time permits; perform related duties as required.
Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible clerical work, of which at least one year should involve school district experience or one year as an Attendance Clerk with the Kern High School District. Must pass the District's bilingual certification test in oral, reading and writing proficiency in Spanish. A criminal history check will be required of successful candidate prior to employment.
Duties of Position:
To reduce truancy at the school site using reports generated from the Synergy Computer System. To contact and counsel students and parents in attendance related matters. Interprets orally and translates written materials in Spanish as required. To communicate with counselors, teachers and administrators involved in the Kern High School District Truancy Reduction Program. Employees in this job classification receive general supervision from a school administrator or his/her designee within a framework of standard policies and procedures.
Employees in this job classification may oversee and supervise students assisting in truancy reduction. This job class exercises responsibility for the accurate compiling and recording of information and data in the Truancy Reduction Program.
