American Sign Language Instructor, Part-time Adjunct Pool - East Kern, Rising Scholars Program

Basic Function

We are soliciting applications for part‑time, hourly adjunct instructors. The starting salary range is $67.00 per hour. This position is part of Kern Community College District’s English department and may involve teaching at multiple campus sites, including day, evening, or weekend classes, large classes, distance learning, and classes for incarcerated students.

This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), focusing on the development of basic conversation skills and the culture and history of the Deaf community. The instructor will identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level; describe and demonstrate ASL classifiers, grammar structure, facial expression, and body movement; compose ASL gloss translations from English; explain basic cultural aspects of the Deaf;

and examine and show an understanding of the history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of related professional experience.
• OR an associate’s degree and at least 6 years of related professional experience.
• OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and accomplishments judged as equal. Candidates who possess such equivalent qualifications must submit an Application for Equivalence form with supporting documents.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population.
• Ability to effectively work with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals.
• Ability to develop curriculum, including curriculum delivered via different modalities.
• Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain subject‑matter currency.
• Ability to assess student learning outcomes.
• Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies that would benefit the program.
• Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.
