Position: .CalWORKs Student Assistant - Coastline College 2026/2027 Academic Year

About Student Assistants

Student Assistants are non‑academic, non‑classified employees employed by the Coast Community College District. They perform a range of duties from unskilled to skilled and may work up to 19.5 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and up to 28 hours per week outside those semesters. Students are at‑will employees, have no entitlement rights to any position in the District, and are not benefit‑eligible.

Students must be enrolled for the current semester and have a federal work‑study award. They may not be employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year.

Representative Duties
  • Student Assistant I – Entry level/Semi‑skilled – Work is under immediate supervision. Tasks are standardized, routine, and repetitive. Work may involve specialized equipment or software as per established procedures. The supervisor assigns work and provides detailed instructions.
  • Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced – Work is under general supervision. Work objectives are set but methods are left to the employee. Tasks are less routine, may involve sophisticated data systems and confidential information, and require moderate independent judgment, analysis, and decision‑making. Minimum one year of experience in a similar assignment is required.
  • Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead – Work is under general supervision with a broad variety of skills. Tasks require considerable independent judgment and decision‑making. Students may direct lower‑level assistants. Minimum two years of experience in a similar assignment is required.
Education and Experience
  • Student Assistant I – Little or no prior experience or education required.
  • Student Assistant II – Some prior knowledge, experience, or education required.
  • Student Assistant III – Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.
Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to perform job assignments.
  • Depending on level and assignment, limited independent judgment and decision‑making.
  • Ability to balance work and studies.
Qualifications
  • Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work‑study through the financial aid office.
  • Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diversity (racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, cultural). This includes students with different ability statuses.
