Position: Teacher, Junior High General And/Or Instrumental Music (2026-2027 School Year)

Qualifications

  • California credential to teach vocal and/or instrumental music in public schools
  • Bachelor's degree with music major or minor desirable
  • Ability to play at least one standard orchestral instrument (if instrumental teacher) or ability to play piano and sing (if vocal or general music teacher)
  • Ability to motivate children to perform in vocal and/or instrumental music

To develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal and/or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in fields of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening and reading music; to meet goals established in District's "Purposes of Instruction," Course of Study and Curriculum Guide in relationship to specific needs of all students under his/her direction.

Performance

Responsibilities
  • In cooperation with principal and other staff, plan instructional objectives for assigned grade level or subject area consistent with Course of Study and Curriculum Guide that meet District's and school's educational goals; objectives to be established by October 15 of each year.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to maturity and interest of students; maintain an effective learning climate; develop reasonable and specific rules of classroom behavior and procedure; maintain classroom order fairly and justly.
  • Analyze learning capacities of students and provide for their needs; plan a balanced music program; organize class time for preparation, rehearsal and instruction within allotted time.
  • Guide learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals; establish clear performance objectives as listed in Course of Study and Curriculum Guide; communicate these objectives to students.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship specified in state law and in administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Make referrals to counselor or principal for pupils who demonstrate severe unsocial behavior patterns; establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior during practice, group rehearsals and musical performances.
  • Keep weekly records and evaluate each pupil's musical growth and performance; review individual contributions; confere with colleagues, students and parents regarding pupil progress as needed; assign citizenship and scholarship marks; use services of school counselor.
  • Maintain positive relationships with all staff and parents through "back to school" events, classroom visitations, conferences, written communication and work samples to keep parents and staff aware of student progress and adjustment.
  • Provide musical programs for school productions, parent‑teacher groups, District honor concerts and civic functions and rating festivals; plan, rehearse and direct pupils in musical programs for school and community; apply knowledge of District procedures and limitations set on performance.
  • Provide individual and small‑group instruction to adapt curriculum to needs of each pupil; utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, appropriate for ages and skill levels.
  • Control storage and use of school‑owned property; make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as required; have pianos tuned at least once a year.
  • Select and requisition books, sheet music, musical instruments and instructional aids and supplies; maintain required inventory records.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff to assess and help pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems; make referrals as required.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulations including cumulative record folders, attendance reports, reports to parents and annual reports.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board policy.
  • Carry out assigned pupil supervision outside classroom such as yard duty, assemblies, athletic events, extracurricular activities and emergency drills.
