Aide II - Special Education
Under supervision, to perform a variety of instructional activities; to assist in the conduct of intensified learning experiences; to perform routine clerical and supportive tasks for instructional personnel; and to do other related work as required.
Reports to:
Principal. Terms of employment: 181 work days contracted. Hours vary by position. Classified Salary Schedule.
Required qualifications:
- Education (ESSA compliant):
Proof of High School Diploma (or GED) AND Rigorous standard of quality on formal state assessment or local assessment OR Two years of college credit OR Associate's of Arts Degree - Knowledge of:
Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics;
Student behavior management strategies and techniques;
Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar;
Basic arithmetic concepts;
Routine record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedures. - Ability to:
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups;
Communicate effectively in oral and written form in English and a second language, as required by the assignment;
Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of education and office related machines and equipment;
Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a positive educational environment;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with children and adults. Respect confidential matters.
Experience:
One year of paid or voluntary experience working with multi-age groups of children or the equivalent. Certificate Requirement:
Possess or secure within six (6) months of employment a certificate for first aid and CPR issued by the American Red Cross or equivalent.
Essential functions of this position:
- Assist instructional personnel with presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises;
Tutor individual students and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up learning activities;
Monitor and assist students in drill, practice, and study activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional concepts by instructional personnel;
Direct students into safe learning and play activities and functions, and assist in the shaping of appropriate social behaviors;
May be required to assist bus drivers in the loading and unloading of special education students as well as riding along on the bus to supervise special education students;
Attend to any special needs that may occur on the vehicle including behavior;
Work with parents, teachers, and drivers to meet the needs of the students and their IEPs;
Administer first aid if needed;
Assist in management of student behavior through use of positive reinforcement strategies and techniques;
May prepare and assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids for use with individual or small groups of students;
Maintain a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information;
Operate and assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional media machines and equipment;
Assist students with activities to develop small muscle and eye-hand coordination;
May assist students with toileting and personal hygiene;
May assist children with feeding activities including preparing students and the delivery of meal trays;
Administer routine first aid and request assistance for non routine injury or illness;
Maintain or assist in maintaining an orderly, attractive and positive learning environment;
Participate in parent conferences, as requested;
May assist in making community resources available to students and/or families.
Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of the job description are the following essential physical requirements:
- 5% Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations;
- 5% Ability to see for purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies and other printed matter and observing students.
- 5% Ability to lift 50 lbs.
