University Background: CSU Bakersfield, founded in 1970, is a regional, comprehensive university serving the southern San Joaquin Valley of California. Position Description

The Department of Music and Theatre accepts applications on an ongoing basis for our pool of part-time lecturers for the following programs:

  • Music:
    • Pedagogy Courses
      • Brass
      • Percussion
      • Strings
      • Woodwinds
    • Mariachi Ensemble
    • Studio Instruction
    • Music Education
    • Music History
    • Music Theory
  • Theatre:
    • Beginning Acting
    • Art of Presentation
    • Dramatic Activity for the Classroom

Applicant pools are used to fill short‑term temporary lecturer positions across the campus with the possibility of re‑hiring. Appointments may last from one day to a whole semester. This applicant pool will be used to fill vacant positions on an as‑needed basis throughout the academic year. Applications in this pool will only be good for the current academic year. This pool will be closed effective May 31, 2027.

If you wish to be considered for the next academic year, you will need to apply to the new pool as it becomes available by June 15, 2027.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Relevant teaching experience in the specified music and theatre areas, and a record of scholarly or artistic activity that aligns with the department’s goals.

Rank and Salary

Lecturer. Anticipated salary range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. Full‑time equivalent salary ranges are as follows (amounts pro‑rated for part‑time assignments):

  • Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677 per month
  • Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224 per month
  • Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523 per month
  • Lecturer D: $8,593 – $15,211 per month
Background Check

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be satisfactorily completed. Offers of employment are conditional and may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, or if it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.

Education Code 89521 Requirements

Applicants must disclose whether they have received a final administrative or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last seven years, only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended. Applicants who reach the final stages of the application process must sign a release form that authorizes the release of information by the applicant’s current and/or former employers to the CSU concerning any substantiated allegations of misconduct.
