Maintenance Engineer – Bakersfield, CA

PTS Advance is looking for a Maintenance Engineer for a direct hire role we have in Bakersfield, CA. The Maintenance Engineer provides mechanical technical support for maintenance and reliability activities, provides design concepts, and manages maintenance focused initiatives. They are responsible for near‑term and long‑term maintenance support on fixed equipment, rotating equipment, I&E, and piping systems.

MUST have Mechanical Engineer Degree and have experience using it out on the field. Minimum 3 years; 10-15 years would be ideal.

Experience with Oil + Gas (refinery industry) and reliability equipment; as built – already in the facility, may need upgrades, etc.

Location:

Bakersfield, CA.

Pay: $96K to $137K. Opportunity for more pay – annual appraisals and individual performance reviews.

PTO – based on experience; starting 2 weeks to 4 weeks – 10 paid holidays, 1 floating holiday.

Benefits: medical, dental, vision, life – 85% company pays for employee & dependent. 401K 6% match after first 60 days.

Schedule:

M-F 40 hours a week; start time 6:30 AM – 2:30 PM; during TA/MEA operation could see more hour.

Required Skills / Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and extremely resourceful.
  • Proven ability to provide mechanical engineering support for capital & maintenance projects.
  • Familiarity with applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Strong technical, analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Ability to function well in a high‑paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite of products.
Essential Functions
  • Supports day-to-day performance of equipment to ensure safe operations and that regulatory, commercial, and logistical requirements are met.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and supports testing of mechanical, electrical, rotating equipment, and hydraulic issues.
  • Leads mechanical field changes and through the MOC (management of change) process for capital and maintenance projects.
  • Improves fixed and rotating equipment asset availability, criticality assessment, PM development, and utilization.
  • Inspects field equipment installations according to the design and fabricator's specifications during unit outages and upgrades.
  • Works with process engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel to troubleshoot failures and provide feedback on RCA reports.
  • Works with vendors, licensors, and contractors to support debottlenecking, optimization, and troubleshooting as needed to maintain safe and reliable operations.
  • Provides support during unit commissioning, startups and shutdowns.
  • Provides after‑hours support when appropriate – emergency call out, etc.
  • Leads and manages small to medium reliability initiatives and participates in the MOC process and hazard reviews (What-Ifs, HAZOPs) and troubleshooting.
  • Leads and/or supports investigations for mechanical related near misses and incidents and maintains current work lists with priorities.
Education and Experience
  • BS Mechanical Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of mechanical engineering operations support experience in petrochemical, refining, and/or renewable fuels processing.
  • Experience with industry standard project management practices.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and/or stairs on tanks, vessels and structures; wear respirator; work around equipment containing high pressures and temperatures and various chemicals.
