Job Title: Instrumentation & Measurement SME (I&E / Process Controls)

Location: Bakersfield, CA (94203)

Position Overview

A leading energy company is seeking an Instrumentation & Measurement Subject Matter Expert (SME) to serve as the technical authority for process instrumentation, measurement systems, analyzers, and control-device performance at a large-scale industrial facility.

This role will provide technical leadership in instrumentation reliability, troubleshooting, optimization, project execution, and measurement accuracy while supporting safe and efficient facility operations.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical SME for process instrumentation, analyzers, and measurement systems.
  • Provide expertise in instrumentation selection, specification, calibration, maintenance, and lifecycle management.
  • Troubleshoot complex instrumentation and measurement issues impacting safety, reliability, and production.
  • Lead root cause analyses (RCA) for instrumentation failures and develop corrective action plans.
  • Support capital projects through instrumentation scopes, design reviews, and FAT/SAT activities.
  • Develop and implement instrumentation standards, best practices, and reliability strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, including ISA, API, ASME, NFPA, and NEC.
  • Support safety instrumented systems (SIS), process safety management (PSM), and facility reliability initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to technicians, engineers, and operations teams.
Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of instrumentation experience within refinery, petrochemical, renewable fuels, chemical processing, or similar industrial environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Instrumentation, Chemical, or related discipline) preferred; equivalent technical experience will be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of process measurement instrumentation, including:
    • Flow
    • Pressure
    • Temperature
    • Level
    • Process analyzers
  • Experience troubleshooting instrumentation systems and supporting reliability improvements.
  • Knowledge of SIS, PSM requirements, and industrial safety practices.
  • Familiarity with ISA, API, ASME, and NEC standards.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ISA certifications (CCST, CAP) or equivalent.
  • Experience with renewable fuels, hydrogen systems, hydroprocessing, or similar emerging energy technologies.
  • Experience integrating DCS, PLC, and APC systems.
  • Capital project experience from FEL/design through commissioning.
  • Experience supporting large-scale industrial facility startups or expansions.
