Environmental Leader

Atlas is seeking an experienced Environmental Leader to drive the growth and operational success of our Bakersfield environmental practice. This leadership role encompasses responsibility for project delivery, client relationship management, team leadership, business development, financial performance, safety, and quality across a broad range of environmental consulting services throughout the Bakersfield and Central Valley markets.

While this is not solely a P&A-focused position, candidates with consulting experience supporting oil and gas plugging and abandonment programs, orphan and idle well remediation, facility decommissioning, methane management, environmental characterization, site restoration, and regulatory closure efforts will be particularly well positioned for success. The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to clients and a leader within the organization, combining strong technical and operational capabilities with a proven ability to develop business, mentor staff, and collaboratively deliver complex environmental projects.

Core Responsibilities

  • Serve as a local environmental lead for the Bakersfield team, helping coordinate staff, project resources, field execution, and operational priorities.
  • Lead and mentor environmental professionals, project managers, field staff, and subcontracted resources assigned to projects in the Bakersfield/Central Valley area.
  • Promote a collaborative, accountable team culture focused on safety, responsiveness, technical quality, and client service.
  • Support workload planning, staff development, project assignments, and coordination with regional and practice leadership.

Project and Program Delivery

  • Manage environmental projects from pursuit and scoping through execution, reporting, invoicing, and closeout.
  • Manage scope, schedule, budget, staffing, subcontractor coordination, and profitability for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including environmental scientists, engineers, geologists, hydro geologists, geophysicists, construction/field managers, and outside contractors.
  • Provide senior-level oversight, risk awareness, and issue resolution for complex field programs and client deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with client requirements, regulatory standards, Atlas quality expectations, and Atlas health and safety procedures.

Oil & Gas / P&A Support (Preferred Experience)

  • Support oil and gas well plugging and abandonment, orphan/idle well remediation, well closure, methane reduction, and oilfield decommissioning projects as applicable.
  • Coordinate or support well file reviews, site reconnaissance, well/site assessments, methane screening or monitoring, abandonment planning, site restoration, and regulatory closeout documentation.
  • Work with P&A technical leads and subcontractors to help align field execution with approved work plans, quality expectations, safety requirements, and client objectives.
  • Support decommissioning of associated oilfield facilities, including tanks, pipelines, surface equipment, waste profiling, soil characterization, and site restoration activities.
  • Recognize and escalate complex downhole, regulatory, safety, access, stakeholder, cost, or schedule issues to the appropriate technical and regional leaders.

Client, Regulatory, and Stakeholder Coordination

  • Serve as a client-facing lead for assigned environmental work and maintain strong working relationships with public and private clients, regulators, subcontractors, landowners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Coordinate communication with agencies, clients, project teams, and subcontractors to support timely decisions, efficient field execution, and clear documentation.
  • Support stakeholder engagement, site access planning, communications, and documentation for work in urban, industrial, oilfield, or sensitive community settings.
  • Help prepare project updates, client briefings, meeting materials, technical memoranda, and closeout deliverables.

Business Development and Market Growth

  • Support growth of environmental services in the Bakersfield/Central Valley market, including existing client expansion and pursuit of new environmental opportunities.
