Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Interpreter
This position requires the knowledge of proper English usage and grammar;
American Sign Language and ability to work along the ASL to SEE (Signed Exact English) spectrum to effectively service Deaf students no matter what Signing Mode is required; basic disabilities associated with the Deaf. Must possess the skill to understand and follow both oral and written instructions independently; accurately interpret classroom lectures, lesson plans, films, etc. using the signing mode that matches the DHH student;
communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; maintain routine records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties (Other interpreters, Teachers of the Deaf, Speech Therapists, General Education Teachers, etc.)
Essential Functions:
- Performs specialized duties for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students requiring fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and other appropriate modes of communication such as Pidgin Sign Language (PSE) and Signing Exact English (SEE)
- Interprets regular classroom lectures, instructional materials, general classroom instructions, school activities, extracurricular activities and other IEP services
- Serves as bridge of communication between the Deaf students and teacher or other school staff
- Facilitates communication between DHH students and hearing peers
- Reports student progress to the IEP team including the Teacher of the Deaf
- Participates as a member of the IEP team to provide insight to communication needs and ability of the DHH student
- Tutor DHH students individually in all subjects during classes and other times as assigned
- Interprets for counselors and other school staff regarding the DHH students
- Provides positive support and encouragement to DHH students
- Maintains routine records in classroom
- Performs related duties as required
Experience /
Education:
No experience required, although work involving students is desirable. Completion of twelfth grade, Interpreter Training Program (ITP) completion ASL INTERPRETER II:
Must also possess the skill to mentor staff interpreters by providing constructive feedback and active teaming. ASL INTERPRETER I QUALIFICATIONS Must possess a level 4.0 certification in the following:
Education Signed Skills Evaluation (ESSE) ASL INTERPRETER II QUALIFICATIONS Must possess a level 4.0 certification in the following:
Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Or possess an NAO, CASLI, RID or other national level of certification for American Sign Language Interpretation A CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK AND PRE-PLACEMENT MEDICAL ASSESSMENT WILL BE REQUIRED OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT.
Duties of Position:
To perform specialized duties in interpreting classroom lectures, instructional materials, general classroom instruction, extracurricular and school activities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students. Employees in this classification receive general to limited supervision from the interpreter coordinator and school site administrator within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job classification works closely with teachers of the Deaf who are the case carriers for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
This job classification exercises responsibility for the communication between DHH students and other school staff members and requires a high degree of proficiency in the use of American Sign Language and other modes of sign language (PSE, SEE, Coded Manual English) to convey information to assigned students.
