Position: Part-Time Parks Maintenance Worker I (AVG. 20 Hrs./Week)

WRITTEN TEST TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2026.

Under close supervision, to perform a variety of unskilled physical labor and semi‑skilled maintenance, repair, construction, clean‑up, and beautification of City parks and recreational facilities; to perform a variety of tree maintenance, grounds maintenance, and gardening duties in and around recreational facilities; and to do related work as required. Serves as Disaster Service Worker. FLSA Status:
Non‑exempt.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry and first working level classification in the Parks Maintenance Worker class series. This level is distinguished from Parks Maintenance Worker II by the performance of a narrower range of assignments and routine grounds maintenance and gardening duties under close supervision while learning job tasks. Incumbents in this class are subject to twenty‑four hour “call out” and standby.

REPORTS TO

Streets and Parks Division Supervisor/Manager, Parks Maintenance Worker II/III, or as assigned.

CLASSIFICATIONS SUPERVISED

This is not a supervisory position.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
  • Reliable and dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Assists with the care of City parks and recreational facilities.
  • Performs duties such as mowing, watering, and shaping lawns and shrubs.
  • Plants, waters, cultivates, weeds, prunes, and fertilizes trees, shrubbery, flowers, and lawns.
  • Loads, rakes, and shovels grass clippings.
  • Sweeps and rakes grounds.
  • Assists with brush chipping, grinding and removing tree stumps as necessary.
  • Utilizes appropriate pest control methods to eradicate weeds and other pests according to established procedures.
  • May cut weeds, clear debris, and clean ditches.
  • Maintains park trees and landscaped areas within recreational facilities.
  • Maintains special recreational areas such as ballfield diamonds and tennis courts.
  • Empties trash receptacles.
  • May set up recreational facilities for events.
  • Maintains and repairs playground equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs sprinkler systems.
  • Does general clean‑up work.
  • Uses general hand tools.
  • Assists with concrete work.
  • Operates power tools such as chain saws.
  • Operates equipment such as trucks, ballfield equipment, back‑hoe, and front loaders.
  • May use a shovel to open, widen, and backfill excavations.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair duties on equipment.
  • Performs basic preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs miscellaneous minor repair and maintenance on automotive equipment and small engines.
  • May perform basic building maintenance activities on City buildings, parks, and recreational facilities.
  • Communicates with the public.
  • May be assigned to assist with other departments or divisions for maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • May be required to attend night or weekend events.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Safe driving practices and the California Vehicle Code relating to the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Work safety practices.
  • Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking, and weeding.
  • Basic knowledge of methods, procedures, and equipment used in care and maintenance of parks, grounds, and recreational facilities with an emphasis on current practices and techniques of ballfield maintenance and preparation.
  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping work.
  • Cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying of flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Operations and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeeping.
  • Health and safety regulations.
ABILITY TO:
  • Perform a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled work in the care, maintenance, and beautification of City parks and recreational facilities.
  • Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake, and cultivate lawns, flower beds, athletic fields, and other landscaped areas.
  • Set up recreational facilities for events.
  • Learn the methods and practices of sprinkler system maintenance and repair.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Maintain and perform basic repairs to equipment.
  • Maintain basic records.
  • Safely operate tools and equipment related to parks and recreational facility care and maintenance.
