Microbiology Lab Technician
Full‑time, regular position at Generous Brands – Bakersfield, CA, USA.
Salary: $20.25–$22.75 per hour.
THE ROLEThe Microbiology Lab Technician will execute daily laboratory operations and ensure the Laboratory Quality Management System is implemented and maintained in accordance with ISO 17025 standards. They will manage data, report results, and maintain equipment and supplies to ensure required testing is completed.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Maintain records and manage all aspects of testing activities.
- Prepare media and agar plates for testing, recording on media logs.
- Perform pour and petrifilm plating, count plates, and record results.
- Report out‑of‑specification conditions and summarize test results.
- Perform sample preparation and testing of raw materials, finished products, and other samples.
- Complete data recording, follow status of testing, generate reports and communicate findings to support the manufacture of quality products.
- Run membrane filtration (water testing method) and PCR method and record results.
- Maintain safety, cleanliness and hygienic laboratory environment, including periodic maintenance, cleaning, and monitoring of equipment and work areas.
- Follow lab safety protocols to maintain hygiene and eliminate cross‑contamination.
- Participate in proficiency program and test control samples.
- Assist or perform other duties/projects as assigned.
- Operate microbiology instruments and equipment, including preventive maintenance, calibration, checks and verification.
- Perform microbiological swabbing and air monitoring (e.g., environment program for the micro lab).
- Work independently and as part of a team to meet department goals, accuracy, timeliness and cost effectiveness.
- Demonstrate competency through successful completion of proficiency testing.
- Associate degree required or bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field; equivalent experience acceptable.
- Strong math skills and ability to perform and understand scientific tests and results.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and apply Good Laboratory Practices.
- Experience in a microbiology or chemistry lab in a food‑processing environment.
- Work typically in cold (< 40°F), warm (> 90°F), or loud environments, and wet or hot conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Second shift:
Friday–Tuesday, 2:00 pm – 10:30 pm; 4:00 pm – 12:30 am when overtime/business requires. Weekends mandatory.
