Maintenance Mechanic II

Position Overview

Maintenance mechanics are responsible for maintaining, modifying and repairing all machinery in the plant. Mechanics have the responsibility to maintain, troubleshoot and repair a variety of electrical and mechanical equipment in a processing environment. This position requires proficiency in multiple skill clusters, such as electrical controls, mechanical systems, welding, fabrication, and manufacturing processes. This person will perform low to medium level machine systems troubleshooting and repair and provide technical support for all phases of the operation.

This work will be of average to considerable difficulty in the accomplishment of a variety of mechanical maintenance actions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ability to rebuild gearboxes, power drives, AC Motors, and replace mechanical Parts.
  • Ability to install production equipment.
  • Ability to repair/rebuild pneumatic cylinders.
  • Ability to follow Preventative Maintenance Program and Procedures assigned.
  • Ability to service and replace pressure switches, photo eyes, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and program at a basic level equipment such as Automated Scales and Vertical Form and Fill Machines.
  • Knowledgeable in mechanical drive fundamentals, i.e., chain drive sprocket and gearbox ratios etc.
  • Ability to read piping diagrams and identify the function of various components for air and water distribution systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot heater elements, air cylinders, gears, vacuum systems, box printers, package printers, check weighers, and conveyor equipment.
  • Ability to replace automated equipment with mechanical components.
  • Proficient in the use of standard hand tools such as wrenches, hammers, bearing pullers etc.
  • Proficient in the use of simple power tools such as drills, grinders, cut-off saws, impact wrenches, etc.
  • Ability to perform plumbing repairs such as unclogging drains, replacing faucets, toilet repairs, etc.
  • Knowledgeable in cleaning and degreasing techniques.
  • Ability to program simple production equipment such as metal detectors, spin dryers, etc.
  • Ability to program VFD’s. Must be able to read electrical schematics and identify components. Must have working knowledge of electrical testing equipment/tools.
Requirements
  • Knowledgeable in equipment safety requirements as they apply to equipment moving and installation.
  • Knowledgeable in forklift and scissor lift safety.
  • Working knowledge in 48-VAC, 240

    VDC electrical safety practices.
  • Ability to safely operate shop equipment such as grinders, cut-off saws, power tools, ladders, etc.
  • Working knowledge of basic protective equipment requirements as they apply to maintenance personnel.
  • Knowledgeable in proper use of portable fire extinguishers and Hot Work Permits.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, FDA, and GMP requirements as they pertain to maintenance activities at a food processing facility.
  • Working knowledge of basic Protective Equipment requirements as they apply to maintenance personnel.
  • Knowledgeable in equipment Lock-Out/Tag-Out requirements. Must not by-pass Safety Devices under any Circumstances.
  • Knowledgeable of safe lifting techniques and expect to ask for help if item that needs to be moved is too heavy.
  • Must use slip resistant footwear due to nature of environment.
  • Must use/wear/follow PPE and GMP compliance as needed.
  • Must be aware of potential hazards:
    Paper/Knife cuts, Slip/falls, Pinch Points, and Contusions.
  • Ability to read/write in English and Communicate in Spanish.
  • Ability to work Flexible hours and overtime as required by workload.
  • Ability to function in a team environment where continuous improvement is expected through communication and cooperation.
  • Willing and able to contribute and implement department programs, procedures, and systems as needed.
  • Ability to Drive Forklift and Scissor Lift.

  • Operators:
    Support and work closely with operators to ensure high machine efficiency. Respond to emergency calls and discuss problems with other mechanics and supervisors.
  • Maintenance Parts Room:
    Requests parts and provide clarity where parts will be used.
  • Maintenance Buyer:
    Meet as needed to request parts and clarify specifications.

    Meets as needed to obtain parts and equipment information.
Education
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience:

    minimum of 2 years in maintenance food manufacturing or related field
