OverviewThe Senior Quality Engineer – Metallurgist is a technical leadership role critical to ensuring metallurgical integrity and product quality across STS Metals’ aerospace product lines. This position serves as a subject matter expert for material specifications, forging processes, and metallurgical performance, with a strong focus on compliance, risk reduction, and continuous improvement. In this role, you’ll interpret customer and regulatory material requirements, support and design forging and heat treatment processes, and review metallurgical test results to ensure conformance.
You’ll play a key role in supporting special processes, maintaining rigorous quality standards under AS9100 and NADCAP, and driving improvements that enhance consistency, reliability, and performance. You’ll work cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, Quality Control, Outside Processing, and Customers—translating technical requirements into practical, repeatable manufacturing outcomes. This is a full-time, exempt position suited for an experienced metallurgical professional who thrives in a hands-on manufacturing environment and values technical ownership.
- Metallurgical Oversight & Material Review:
Interpret customer material specifications and ensure metallurgical compliance across production orders. - Review mechanical and metallurgical test results (tensile, hardness, microstructure, grain size, fracture toughness, etc.) for conformity and accuracy.
- Evaluate and disposition nonconforming material using metallurgical analysis and root cause techniques.
- Support the development of forging processes using metallurgical controls (temperature, thermomechanical reduction, etc.) to ensure optimal product quality in compliance with customer requirements.
- Provide technical oversight for internal special processes including forging and heat treatment.
- Ensure compliance with NADCAP requirements through periodic audits, corrective action leadership, and documentation review.
- Support internal audits as applicable including and not limited to: AS9100, NADCAP, etc.
- Support and lead First Article Inspections (FAIs) in accordance with AS9102.
- Validate metallurgical processes through process capability studies, SPC, and statistical analysis.
- Support the Quality Management System through Continuous Improvement efforts, with a focus on metallurgical processes.
- Lead Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) initiatives related to material nonconformities
- Utilize Six Sigma, lean principles, and root cause tools to drive process and quality improvements.
- Serve as the primary technical contact for metallurgical quality issues with customers and suppliers (heat treatment, ultrasonic inspection, metallurgical testing, etc.)
- Conduct supplier audits and provide technical guidance to ensure raw material and special process conformance.
- Support the Sales and Engineering teams with metallurgical expertise during quoting, contract review, and technical discussions.
- Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, Materials Science, or related technical field.
- 7–10+ years of experience in aerospace quality, metallurgy, or related manufacturing environments.
- In-depth understanding of metals and alloys (titanium, nickel, steel etc.) used in aerospace applications.
- Expertise in interpreting specifications such as AMS, ASTM, ASME, and customer-specific requirements.
- Prior experience with AS9100, ISO 9001, and NADCAP is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with aerospace mechanical testing methods. (tensile, impact, hardness, microstructure)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, and quality systems software.
