Assistant Controller
Location: Baltimore, MD (Hybrid – 4 days onsite, 1 day remote)
A respected nonprofit organization serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and behavioral health needs is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to support its growing finance department.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional ready to expand leadership responsibilities while working in a collaborative, mission-focused environment.
Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will help oversee daily accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, and staff development.
Responsibilities- Assist in managing the monthly and year-end close process.
- Review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reports.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Coordinate audit requests and assist with annual audit preparation.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Evaluate and improve accounting processes and internal controls.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and special financial projects.
- Serve as backup to the Controller as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience.
- Prior supervisory experience preferred.
- Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Experience in behavioral health, healthcare, human services, or IDD is preferred but not required.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and accounting software experience.
