The Jewish Library of Baltimore, a program of The Associated:
Jewish Federation of Baltimore, is seeking a part‑time Library Clerk. The part‑time Library Clerk serves as the first point of contact for patrons of the Jewish Library of Baltimore (JLB) and provides support in delivering library services to the community. As the JLB is a dual‑language library with materials in both English and Hebrew, applicants should possess sufficient familiarity with the Hebrew language to assist patrons in locating and using library materials.
Candidates should also have knowledge of Jewish history, culture, traditions, holidays, and religious practices sufficient to help patrons identify and access relevant resources. The position requires an understanding of the Dewey Decimal Classification System, including the ability to organize, shelve, and retrieve materials accurately, as well as experience using online library catalogs and databases to search for materials and assist patrons with their information needs.
Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills are essential. This is a part‑time position; 15 hours per week in person:
Sunday 10:00am‑3:00pm, Tuesday 3:00pm‑8:00pm and Friday 10:00am‑3:00pm.
- Staff the circulation desk and create/manage patron library accounts, handling telephone and email correspondence and registering patrons for library programs.
- Identify and locate appropriate information and materials, instruct patrons on the use of library resources, and navigate the cataloging system (Follett Destiny).
- Maintain the physical collection by shelving, shelf‑reading, and keeping it in good order.
- Enter new resources into the online catalog, edit existing online records, extract data from online records, and keep statistics of circulation at the desk.
- Use Microsoft Office Suite and common label templates, communicate library policies and procedures, project a positive attitude, and maintain confidentiality.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; 1–3 years of library experience.
- Familiar with Hebrew language and knowledge of Jewish history, culture, traditions, holidays, and religious practices.
- Understanding of the Dewey Decimal Classification System and ability to organize, shelve, and retrieve materials accurately.
- Experience using OPACs and library databases for research, circulation tasks, and management.
- Strong customer service and communication skills, detail‑oriented, proactive, and solution‑focused.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and commitment to the mission of The Associated.
- Must be able to work in‑person 15 hours per week on the specified schedule.
- Salary: $20 per hour for 15 hours per week, commensurate with experience.
