Research Data Analyst​/Programmer Senior, Lead, Manager

Position Overview

The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health is hiring a Research Data Analyst/Programmer in the Division of Maternal and Child Health. Under general supervision, the analyst/programmer will extract and analyze clinical and claims data to support research studies and proposal development for the division and its collaborators. The Department’s mission is to advance public health by investigating the causes, treatment, and prevention of human health problems.

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and data analysts/programmers and will have programming experience in Python, SQL or R, along with experience analyzing and working with healthcare data and research.

• Query, manage, and extract data from large clinical data repositories, including designing and developing scalable data architectures and analytic frameworks to support large‑scale data processing and analysis.
• Gather and transform raw data from multiple disparate sources through scripting, API integrations, and SQL queries to prepare data for analysis.
• Ensure analytics infrastructure and related systems meet business requirements and industry best practices by implementing procedures and protocols to monitor, analyze, and validate data integrity.
• Support the development of big data, batch, and real‑time analytical processing solutions using emerging technologies.
• Identify process workflows and quality assurance/control measures to effectively monitor and manage project schedules, scope, and budgets.
• Collaborate with other programmers to maintain and manage cohorts, data extraction processes, and related code repositories.
• Maintain effective communication with stakeholders, providing progress updates regarding complex data collection, analysis, and reporting processes.
• Mentor and train less experienced personnel in qualitative and quantitative analysis.
• Serve as a lead in the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals by providing and presenting statistical information in the form of tables, charts, or graphs.
• Report directly to the Division Director/PI. This is a hybrid position with up to two telework days per week.

This position will be filled by a Senior, Lead, or Manager level role based upon the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, and skill level.

• Education:
  
  Bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Social Science, Public Policy, Mathematics, Statistics, Health Science, or related field.
• Experience:
  
  Two (2) years related experience in a research environment required. Proficiency with SAS, STATA, SPSS, and/or Excel preferred.

  Additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year‑for‑year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits equaling one year of related experience.

• Education:
  
  Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, Public Policy, Public Administration, Information Management, Social Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Health Science, or related field. Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Sociology, Public Policy, Public Administration, or related area preferred.
• Experience:
  
  Three (3) years of related experience in a research environment, including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization.
