Construction Project Manager

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an experienced Construction Project Manager with a strong background in the electric utility industry to lead the successful delivery of complex EPC and Design-Build projects. These projects involve transmission lines, substations, and electric distribution infrastructure.

This role provides leadership throughout the entire project lifecycle, from pre-construction planning and procurement through construction, commissioning, closeout, and post-construction phases. The construction project manager directs projects, so they are executed safely, on schedule, within budget and in accordance with contractual and quality requirements.

Working closely with engineering, procurement, construction and field leadership teams, the manager coordinates all aspects of project execution. Responsibilities include overseeing construction managers, construction planning, subcontractor and supplier management, project controls, cost and schedule performance, contract administration, and documentation.

Serving as a key liaison between the client, project stakeholders and field operations, the successful candidate will proactively identify opportunities to improve project delivery, enhance constructability, mitigate risks, and expand construction support services.

Transmission & Distribution (T&D) construction experience is preferred. This includes overseeing safety, quality, contracts and subcontracts, scope, cost, schedule, productivity, site logistics, contractor coordination, client interface, and overall project execution.

What you will do:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the construction management team, promoting consistent application of best practices, safety standards, project planning, and project execution.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve construction management processes, procedures, templates, and reporting tools to support standardized and efficient program delivery.
  • Conduct regular site visits to active construction projects to observe construction activities and document progress, safety, quality, environmental, and constructability observations for reporting purposes. Identify potential scope gaps during project development and construction execution, as well as constructability, coordination, and scheduling challenges.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings, construction meetings, and other project coordination activities.
  • Support the development of pre-construction sequencing plans and outage plans.
  • Accompany project managers and escort visitors as needed during site visits related to project scoping, planning, and construction activities.
  • Develop and lead Pre-Task Hazard Analysis briefings for Burns & McDonnell-led site visits and field activities.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports summarizing construction progress, performance, quality, safety, and environmental observations.
  • Support project teams in resolving construction-related issues.
  • Participate in punch-list walkdowns, one-line verification walkdowns, pre-energization walkdowns and other checklist/verification walkdowns before, during, and after construction.
  • Adhere to company's safety programs, trainings, and policies, as well as promote and manage the Safety & Health performance of project team members and subcontractors.
  • Responsible for the oversight of day-to-day construction activities and the successful execution of single or multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Provide direction and participate in project planning, scheduling, estimating, cost development, and establishing critical project objectives.
  • Develop new and manage existing client relationships while interfacing with the client for proposal and project related items.
  • Participate in internal and external project risk reviews and consult with Legal Department as required.
  • Negotiate prime contracts, CM contracts, subcontracts, and change orders.
  • Participate in risk review process.
  • Implement assigned sections of the Project Execution Plan, including construction execution, construction quality assurance plan, safety & health plan, subcontracting plan, project staffing plan, organization chart, and procurement plan.
