The museum is offering a two-year Andrew W. Mellon Advanced Training Fellowship in Objects Conservation beginning fall of 2026.The fellow will join the Department of Conservation, Collections and Technical Research, a dynamic team of museum professionals with a shared focus on the preservation, study, and installation of the Walters Collection.

The conservation team includes specialists inbooks, objects, paintings, and preventive conservation, as well as conservation science.

The fellowship provides in-depth training and research opportunities to a candidateat the post-graduate level specializing inobjectsconservation.

Reporting to the Managing Head of Conservationand Technical Research, the fellow will work as a full member of an active department that focuses on treatment, research, preventativecareand public outreach with a commitment to participation in professional activities. As a member of the department, the fellow will also work within a larger team of professionals in collections management,exhibitions, and installation and production to gain experience and exposure to the comprehensive nature of a conservator's role in a museum setting.

The fellow will gain experience working on the museum's diverse collection dating from 5,000 BCE to the 21 st century.

Approximately halftheir time will be devoted to working with staff on the museum's programmatic priorities, including activities relating to exhibitions, installations,loansand preventive care of the permanent collections, as well as public outreach through the museum'spublic "Conservation Window." The remaining time the Fellow will focus on an in-depth research project, culminating in a publishable paper with full access to the resources andexpertiseof the museum's science lab and scientist.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Candidates must be a graduate of a recognized conservation training program specializing in objects conservation or have equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated interest in technical research.
• Must be available to work Monday – Friday during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. withflexibilityforoccasionalweekend shifts working in the Conservation Window; totalweekly hoursnot to exceed 40.

ANNUAL STARTING SALARY $58,768

The Walters Art Museum provides an excellent comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, prescription, vision, subsidized transportation and parking, museum membership, short term disability, long-term disability, life insurance, FSA (flexible spending account), 457b retirement, and free professional financial management counseling. This is a 100% onsite position and is part of the AFSCME-WWU collective bargaining unit.
