Position Overview
The Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry is seeking a Dental Assistant qualified in Expanded Functions to provide chairside assistance within the team-based dental clinic for both inpatients and ambulatory care.

- Prepare patients and operatory for dental procedures.
- Expanded Function Duties:
- Take vital signs and record readings.
- Place or remove retraction cord.
- Remove sutures.
- Dry a root canal.
- Apply topical fluoride or fluoride varnish.
- Place or remove a rubber dam.
- Remove or place a periodontal dressing.
- Prepare and fit stainless steel crowns.
- Take alginate impressions for intraoral appliances.
- Place or remove a matrix band.
- Prepare temporary crowns.
- Cement temporary crowns or restorations.
- Perform vitality tests.
- Place temporary restorations.
- Remove temporary crowns.
- Remove excess cement.
- Fabricate athletic mouth‑guards, bleaching trays, fluoride trays, impression trays, night‑guards on models.
- Deliver restorative material with dentist at chairside.
- Apply desensitizing agents.
- Fabricate indirect restorations in a lab.
- Take digital impressions.
- Perform bite registration.
- Bleach using bleaching trays.
- Apply bonding agents.
- Apply topical anesthesia.
- Etch teeth.
- Fabricate indirect restorations in a dental office.
- Apply desensitizing agents again (duplicate).
- Place and remove wedges.
- Give oral hygiene instructions.
- All duties designated to Dental Assistants under the same level of required supervision.
- Any other duty approved by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners.
- Take and develop dental radiographs (x‑rays).
- Provide patients with instructions for oral care following dental treatment procedures.
- Clean and maintain each operatory and lab area following HEIC and OSHA guidelines.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 3 years of prior experience as an EFDA.
- Registered by the State of Maryland as a Dental Assistant qualified in general duties.
- Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) through the Dental Assisting National Board.
- Current licensure by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners in Dental Radiation Technology.
- CPR certification.
- Must be a great communicator, able to multitask and anticipate the provider’s needs while listening to the patient.
