OPEN RANK: CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR / CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Department of Comprehensive Dentistry | Division of General Practice University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Dentistry

About the Position

The University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Dentistry is looking for a full-time non-tenure clinical faculty member to join the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys teaching, takes pride in mentoring the next generation of dentists, and wants to grow in academic dentistry over the long term.

This role sits at the intersection of clinical education, patient care, and day-to-day academic operations. You will be directly shaping how pre-doctoral students develop into confident, competent dentists.

This position is based in the Division of General Practice within the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry. The Division operates on a Group Practice model, organized into eight group practices. The 40 hours weekly will be distributed according to the scheduled clinic hours:
Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, including evening clinics from 4:00- 6:30 pm.

Function/Duties of the Position

Day to day, your responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching in the predoctoral dental clinic, supervising students providing patient care
  • Mentoring assigned students on academic and clinical progress throughout the clinical curriculum
  • Managing patient care with students within their assigned group practice.
  • Track student progress and collaborate with academic affairs on student deficiencies.
  • Teach and direct appropriate predoctoral courses tied to the department, including treatment planning, restorative dentistry, and diagnostic sciences
  • Assist the staff, faculty, and administration in training adjunct faculty to achieve clinical calibration.
  • Supporting quality assurance, compliance, and improvement efforts in collaboration with the Division Director and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs
  • Responding to operational needs and special assignments from the Chair of the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry
  • Contributing as a genuine team member in identifying problems and working through solutions
Required Qualifications
  • DMD or DDS from a CODA-accredited institution, or a foreign equivalent dental degree
  • Eligibility for a teaching dental license in Maryland
  • The applicant must have a minimum of 5-years of clinical practice in a comprehensive general dentistry setting.
  • Solid hands-on experience in clinical experience in comprehensive patient care, including phased treatment planning, operative and direct restorative dentistry, single-unit indirect restorations, urgent dental care, post-operative management, and generating appropriate referrals
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and Power Point

Hiring range: $135,000 to $150,000 (depending on academic rank and commensurate with education and experience).
