$34–40/hour, commensurate with experience

About Us

Big Tent Design Studio is a small, growing architecture practice based in Washington, DC. Our projects range across residential, educational, retail, commercial, and institutional work. Many share a common thread: building community—creating spaces that foster connection, inclusion, and a sense of belonging.

We care about thoughtful design, pragmatic solutions, and making good architecture accessible to a wide range of people and communities. We are committed to creative problem‑solving—finding ways to deliver quality design regardless of project scale or constraints.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for an architectural professional who’s ready to roll up their sleeves and get involved in every phase of the work. This role is ideal for a mid‑level architect (4–8 years’ experience) who is strong in production, curious about design, and excited to collaborate in a hands‑on, principal‑led environment. Exceptional candidates with 3+ years of experience will also be considered.

You’ll be involved in multiple projects at once and work closely with the principal, with plenty of opportunities to contribute ideas, ask questions, and grow.

Primary Role

Your primary role is to move design concepts forward and produce coordinated, client‑ready drawing and presentation packages. In this role, you will:

  • Support early‑phase concept and design development
  • Produce and coordinate drawing sets in Revit (plans, sections, details, sheets)
  • Research zoning and code issues;
  • Organize and coordinate permit application drawings
  • Prepare clear, compelling presentations and graphics for clients
  • Coordinate with consultants, track deliverables
  • Attend site visits and assist with construction administration
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks at once, adjusting as project needs shift
How We Work

We value clear expectations, direct feedback, and steady progress over heroics. We’re looking for someone who:

  • Moves comfortably between design, document production, and design coordination as project needs shift
  • Prioritizes effectively—organizing a long list of tasks into a realistic, well‑ordered plan (what’s urgent, what’s blocking others, what can wait)
  • Uses an understanding of how design evolves and how buildings are built to guide decisions and set priorities
  • Brings a solutions‑oriented mindset: asks thoughtful questions, surfaces decisions, offers options, and makes recommendations
  • Uses hand drawing as an everyday tool for clarifying and communicating ideas—not just for final presentations
  • Communicates proactively—sharing updates, flagging assumptions, and documenting decisions to keep the team in sync
  • Maintains high standards for quality: coordination, accuracy, clean graphics, and well‑organized sheets
  • Is interested in following—and helping to evolve—office standards and templates for file setup, change tracking, and documentation
  • Collaborates well with both our in‑house team and outside consultants, responding thoughtfully to feedback
Requirements
  • Ideally 4–8 years of experience in an architecture firm (exceptional 3+ year candidates will be considered)
  • Strong Revit skills; able to produce complete drawing sets (not just markups)
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Organized, reliable, and proactive
  • Able to work onsite in Washington, DC
Preferred
  • Familiarity with DC, Maryland, or Virginia permitting processes
  • Experience with Revit consultant coordination workflows
  • Comfortable sharing process work as part of design communication (hand sketches, markups, diagrams, etc.)
What We Offer
  • A variety of project types and a hands‑on, supportive environment
  • Direct collaboration with firm leadership
  • Meaningful responsibility and a chance to help shape how we work
  • A clear path to expanded responsibilities and potential full‑time growth
  • Healthcare coverage available for full‑time employees
How to Apply

Please send a short introduction, your resume, and a portfolio link (including 1–2 pages of process work) through Linked In or to infoign.
