Overview
The Hospitalist Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital is a group of more than 50 faculty, 12‑14 APP, and 5‑6 support staff embedded within the Department of Medicine. The group's mission includes patient care, education, research, and clinical administration.
General DescriptionThe Hospitalist Program operates a hospitalist‑run Resident‑covered general medical service (“Brancati Service”), a consult service, co‑management services (Orthopedic Surgery Co‑management and Oncology Solid Tumor Co‑management), a Medicine Progressive Care Unit (“MPC”), a flex hospitalist program, and Hopkins Access Line coverage. The Hospitalist Unit and Brancati Service together manage up to 90 inpatients. Faculty may also participate in non‑program activities such as Pediatrics and the Osler Firms.
New clinical services (e.g., neurology IMC co‑management, short‑stay unit) are being explored and may be deployed within the next year.
- Patient Care:
- Provide comprehensive medical care for hospitalized patients, including admission, diagnosis, treatment, and discharge planning.
- Monitor patients’ progress, adjust treatments, and ensure appropriate follow‑up care post‑discharge.
- Conduct daily rounds to assess patients’ conditions and update treatment plans.
- Make timely, evidence‑based decisions regarding patient care and treatment plans.
- Respond to clinical emergencies, assist in critical care situations, and ensure patient safety and comfort.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with attending physicians, specialists, nurses, and other team members to provide coordinated care.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families, providing education on diagnoses, treatment options, and care plans.
- Documentation and Compliance:
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Adhere to hospital policies and regulatory requirements, including quality improvement initiatives, infection control, and safety protocols.
- Quality Improvement:
- Participate in departmental quality improvement projects to enhance patient care, safety, and satisfaction.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and best practices.
- Education and Mentorship:
- Provide education to residents, interns, and medical students during clinical rounds and other settings.
- Engage in continuous professional development and training.
- Meet the productivity and performance expectations on each of the clinical services.
- Provide clinical feedback and administrative feedback to Hospitalist leadership as needed.
- May be required to share administrator‑on‑call duties with other group leaders.
- Education:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
- Licensure:
- Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
- Active medical license in Maryland.
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) required.
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) preferred.
