Medical Director, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
University of Maryland St Joseph's Medical Center (UM-SJMC)

I. GENERAL SUMMARY

The Department of Pediatrics, University of Maryland School of Medicine seeks a mid‑career or senior level Neonatologist to join UM‑SJMC as the level III NICU Medical Director. This position requires strong clinical, operational, and leadership skills and experience in neonatal care, quality, and safety to lead the clinical service. The successful candidate will have an MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school, a completed Neonatal‑Perinatal Fellowship, and Board Certification.

They must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a physician in the State of Maryland.

Position Highlights
  • Level III NICU: 20 bed capacity, ADC 10‑15, located in Towson, MD
  • Staffed 24/7 with Neonatal Nurse Practitioners
  • Tele Health Support 24/7 from the UMMC Level IV NICU
  • Maryland Regional Neonatal Transport Program (MRNTP) services
  • Referral to UMMC Level IV NICU and UMMC PICU providing ECMO and post‑cardiac surgery care
  • Vermont‑Oxford Network reporting on quality metrics

UM SJMC is a 263‑bed Catholic hospital with more than 700 physicians on the medical staff, offering specialties including cardiology, cancer, orthopedics, emergency care, obstetrics and gynecology, surgical services, diabetes, psychiatric services, and wound healing.

UMMS Referral and Support Services
  • Level IV – 52 State‑of‑the‑art single‑family‑room NICU with an accredited Neonatal‑Perinatal fellowship program

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides leadership and oversight of medical care delivery by clinical staff through direct supervision and audits.
  • Directs activities related to delivery of medical care and clinical services, including utilization review, quality assurance, policy and procedure development.
  • Participates in recruitment and selection of medical providers and provides regular performance reviews and feedback.
  • Serves as a mentor, providing education and developmental opportunities to clinical staff.
  • Maintains an equitable, diverse, and inclusive work environment with transparent and objective decision‑making.
  • Monitors quality and appropriateness of medical care, ensuring timely and accurate record keeping and documentation to support clinical and reimbursement activity.
  • Participates in the Peer Review Program per Medical Staff Bylaws and UMMC policies.
  • Provides oversight of utilization and risk management activities, monitoring service utilization, adherence to the corporate compliance plan, and attainment of productivity targets.
  • Promotes cost containment, savings, and revenue opportunities while seeking cost‑effective alternatives.
  • Manages physician relations and resolves clinical patient complaints and practice‑related issues.
  • Attends standing meetings (board, committee, etc.).
  • Manages strategic development for the practice.
  • Completes mandatory employee health, workers’ compensation, HR processes, and other training to ensure compliance with FPI rules and regulations.
  • In addition to administrative functions, the medical director is expected to carry a patient load.

    Qualifications

    Board Certified or Board Eligible Neonatologist, MD/DO with Neonatal‑Perinatal Fellowship and Maryland license or eligibility. Strong leadership, educational, and operational experience in a level III NICU setting.
