Position: Oculoplastic Surgeon, Potential for Chief of Service

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking an oculoplastic surgeon to join the full-time faculty with the potential to serve as Chief of Service. This position offers a unique opportunity to have a central role in shaping the strategic direction and future growth of the service. Expected faculty rank for this position is Assistant Professor or higher, however, final rank, tenure status and salary will be dependent upon selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The candidate should be ABO-eligible or ABO-certified. This open-rank position is well suited to candidates at different career stages. Early-career faculty will find a collegial environment with strong mentorship, opportunities to build a thriving clinical practice, and support for professional development. More experienced candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to the continued growth and strategic direction of the oculoplastics service, including mentorship of faculty and trainees.

Both clinician-educators and clinician-scientists are welcome to apply. The qualified applicant will have the opportunity to provide oculoplastic services at the University of Maryland Medical Center, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (Level 1 Trauma Center for the State of Maryland), Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and ambulatory care locations. The service is deeply integrated within the institution, offering rich opportunities to collaborate with Shock Trauma, Neurosurgery, ENT, and other surgical and medical specialties on complex, high-impact cases.

An ASOPRS fellow rotates through the service, and this position will work closely with the fellow in a collaborative clinical and educational setting. Senior mentorship is available onsite, providing a strong foundation for leadership development, clinical excellence, and academic growth. Active participation in the residency training program is essential. Extensive opportunities for clinical research both within and across the School’s departments are available.

Laboratory space and resources in the Department are available for individuals with basic research interest.

The campus is ideally situated in the heart of downtown Baltimore, steps from Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium and just minutes from the Inner Harbor, National Aquarium, and Maryland Science Center. Baltimore offers a rich cultural scene with world‑class museums, symphony and performing arts, acclaimed dining, and passionate professional sports—paired with the character and history of a classic American city.

The broader Baltimore–Washington, D.C. region provides exceptional lifestyle flexibility. Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City are all easily accessible, while Atlantic beaches to the east and mountain getaways to the west make weekend escapes effortless. The area features outstanding public and private schools, diverse and welcoming neighborhoods, and a wide range of living options—from historic urban communities to suburban and waterfront settings—making it an ideal place for individuals and families alike.
