After school sports coaches work with deaf and hard-of-hearing students by coaching, mentoring, and developing student-athletes in both the fundamentals and advanced skills of their respective sport, while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and academic success. The coach is responsible for planning and conducting practices, supervising student-athletes during athletic activities, ensuring safety and compliance with school and league regulations, and fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages personal growth and team achievement.
PositionDuties
- Plan and conduct practices and supervise student-athletes during practices and competitions.
- Coaching, mentoring, and developing student-athletes in both fundamentals and advanced skills.
- Ensure safety and compliance with school and league regulations.
- Model appropriate behavior, follow protocol for injuries, and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, other coaches, and administrators.
- Report to the Athletic Director and/or Assistant Athletic Director.
Work requires physical stamina and mobility to demonstrate and participate in athletic drills and training activities. Ability to stand, run, crouch, throw, and move quickly across practice and game areas. Must be able to lift, move, and transport equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Frequent walking, standing, bending, and stretching are required. Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
Evening and weekend hours required for practices and competitions.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Knowledge of deaf and hard-of-hearing students and the ability to teach students on different levels, with varying educational backgrounds.
- Strong communication skills are mandatory; proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coaching experience and knowledge of the Deaf Community preferred.
New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections ). Candidates must provide three letters of recommendation.
BenefitsContractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled.
The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
