Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. AAP offers high‑quality master’s degrees and certificate programs at its Washington, D.C., Center, at JHU's Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and online. AAP enrolls almost 6,000 students each academic year in over 45 programs and distinguishes itself through intensive instructional assistance, selective admissions, and 60 dedicated full‑time faculty.

Position DescriptionThe Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) division seeks non‑tenure‑track adjunct faculty to teach courses within the MA in Writing program. Classes are offered online asynchronously in Canvas or in real‑time via Zoom. We are looking for fiction and nonfiction writers who have published extensively. The ideal candidate has published at least one book and has online teaching experience, with particular interest in engaging students from diverse backgrounds.
Candidates may teach one or more of the following courses.
- Fiction Workshop – 490.660
Fiction workshops focus on intensive writing and revision, with required reading. Students submit short stories or novel chapters for critique and revision.
- Nonfiction Workshop – 490.670
General workshops give students extensive experience in writing and revising factual work. Students submit essays, articles, or book chapters, and revise based on peer and instructor feedback.
- Writing Memoir & Personal Essay Workshop – 490.693
Specialized nonfiction workshop where students explore memoir and personal essay as distinct forms, developing voice and style in personal nonfiction.
- Heritage of Literature – Examining the 20th Century – 490.684
Reading elective that examines historical development of fiction and nonfiction, emphasizing the interrelationship of social and cultural development with writing craft.
- Voice in Fiction and Nonfiction – 490.745
Cross‑concentration craft elective examining aspects of voice in fiction and factual writing, with exercises to strengthen individual styles.
- Teach one or more MA in Writing courses online.
- Develop course materials, assignments, and assessments.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to students.
- Engage students from diverse backgrounds and support their academic success.
- Participate in program meetings and professional development as required.
- Advanced degree in creative writing, English, or journalism (master’s or higher).
- 1–3 years of higher education teaching experience in fiction or nonfiction classes.
- Extensive publication in popular press, literary journals, and/or book form.
- Terminal degree in Fiction Writing or a related field.
- 1–3 years of graduate‑level creative writing teaching experience.
- Online teaching experience.
- Familiarity with Canvas.
- Background to teach a wide variety of writing courses.

Salary RangeThe referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting.
