Position Summary

Reporting to the Lower School Director, the Lower School Reading Specialist is responsible for providing targeted literacy instruction, assessment, and support for students in grades PK-5. This role involves working closely with classroom teachers to implement research-based reading strategies, conducting providing direct intervention for students with diverse learning needs. The Lower School Reading Specialist is a member of the Student Support Services team and works closely with the Lower School Learning Specialist.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and small-group intensive reading intervention using evidence-based practices.
  • Administer and interpret formal and informal literacy assessments to identify students’ strengths and areas for growth.
  • Monitor student progress regularly and adjust instructional plans based on data.
  • Maintain detailed records of student performance and prepare progress reports for parents and administrators.
  • Partner with classroom teachers to differentiate literacy instruction within the general education setting.
  • Model effective reading strategies and support tiered instruction (RTI/MTSS models).
  • Lead or participate in Student Support Team (SST) meetings to discuss individual student needs.
  • Guide and monitor the scope and sequence of reading instruction in the lower school division.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty on the latest research in the "Science of Reading."
  • Conduct workshops or informational sessions for parents regarding literacy development and home‑support strategies.
  • Curate and manage literacy resources and specialized materials for the Lower School.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in Education required;
    Master’s degree in Reading, Special Education, or Literacy preferred.
  • Certification:
    Valid Reading Specialist certification or endorsement.
  • Experience:

    Minimum of 3–5 years of experience teaching elementary reading, specifically with early childhood and primary grades.
  • Specialized Training:
    Demonstrated proficiency in structured literacy programs (experience with UFLI preferred).
  • Ideal candidates bring experience implementing writing instruction, including explicit instruction in the writing process.
  • Soft Skills:

    Strong empathetic communication skills, patience, and a collaborative spirit.
  • Physical

    Skills:

    Must be able to navigate a school campus and move between multiple classrooms. Frequent interaction with young children, requiring high energy and adaptability.

Opportunities to participate in extracurricular programs (e.g., athletics, arts, after-school programming) are available.

Salary and Benefits

Bryn Mawr School follows a Faculty Salary Scale. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate's years of experience, education, skills, and job‑related responsibilities. Candidates with additional experience or qualifications may be offered a salary outside the range shown.
