Position OverviewThe Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce an adjunct ballet teaching position in the Dance Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD commencing September 2026.
The successful candidate will have experience teaching ballet technique and choreography to students of all levels (beginner to advanced) ages 7-18. The position may be assigned specialized classes based on the candidate’s expertise in ballet partnering, pre‑pointe/pointe, variations, and/or dance conditioning classes. Preference will be given to a candidate with professional performance experience and a record of exceptional teaching.
The successful candidate will teach the principles of ballet technique from an anatomical perspective, nurture enthusiasm for ballet training in the dancers, and create an inclusive, welcoming, and safe learning environment for students of all abilities. The candidate will engage current best teaching practices including developing and delivering meaningful and appropriate lesson plans, providing individual feedback and encouragement to all students, and building autonomy in the dancers to develop as artists.
The candidate will willingly collaborate with the other teachers and the Department Chair to facilitate continued student progress and department‑wide performances and goals.
Teaching up to 9.5 hours of ballet technique classes at Peabody Preparatory's downtown, Towson, or affiliated campuses. Classes may be scheduled between 4:30 pm – 9:00 pm Monday – Friday and/or between the hours of 9:00 am – 4:00 pm on Saturday. Classes will meet for 32 weeks during the Preparatory school year from September to May. This teacher may also set and/or create choreography for the Dance Department's year‑end performances in May.
Although most performance preparation takes place during regular class times, performance responsibilities may include additional rehearsals at the end of the spring semester.
- Professional ballet performance experience and/or a bachelor's degree in dance/choreography required.
- Documented successful teaching experience required.
- Preferred qualifications:
success in teaching classes in a pre‑professional dance program; experience setting and being a rehearsal director for repertory pieces; experience preparing pre‑professional students for performances.
