General

Purpose:

MICA's 2 and 4-week Pre-College Art and Design Program offers an intensive, college-level experience designed to help participants transition from thinking like high school art students to approaching their work as professional artists. Students develop art that demonstrates advanced skills and personal vision, communicate their ideas during daily critiques, and build a professional portfolio. Tailored for rising juniors and seniors (ages 15 to 17), this program immerses students in a vibrant artistic community while exposing them to the rigor of college-level studies.

Aligned with MICA's Mission and Vision, the program fosters a welcoming environment that supports students of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, creative abilities, religious beliefs, political affiliations, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

This position reports to the Pre-College Program Manager and the Director of Youth & Community Education. The Academic Coordinator is considered Professional Staff and will be provided housing and a meal plan during program dates. This position is required to live on campus, beginning one week before students arrive, and throughout the duration of the program. The Academic Coordinator is expected to be on call at least 3 days a week and uphold office hours 5 days a week, for 5 hours each day, for the duration of the program.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Assist with the successful implementation of the Pre-College program within a team of coordinators. The variety of tasks associated with this position requires administrative, clerical, physical, organizational, and leadership skills

Program Operations

* Coordinate program logistics, including visiting artist talks, exhibitions, graduation ceremony, field trips, and administrative support

* Model and enforce program policies, procedures, and community standards

* Acts as an ambassador for the program when appropriate

* Serve as liaison between Teaching Assistants, Faculty, Program Coordinators, Exhibitions, and other campus departments

* Assist Coordinators and program faculty to ensure academic integrity, along with a safe and positive residential experience for Pre-College participants

Faculty & Academic Support

* Assist Faculty with syllabi and setting classroom expectations

* Work with the Program Manager to collect Faculty art material lists

* Work with MICA's school store to schedule class visits for supply purchases

* Schedule and order faculty instructional supplies for classes

* Coordinate and work with appropriate offices to schedule models for painting and drawing classes

* Coordinate with Faculty and Exhibitions department to ensure the successful installation of each session's final exhibition

* Host weekly Wednesday Faculty meetings

* Answer questions and manage/resolve issues related to classroom facilities, staffing, and equipment

Student Support & Community Engagement

* Schedule and book 2 visiting artist talks from professional artists

* Provides support, including interventions and referrals, when appropriate for individual student needs

* Maintain an open line of communication and support for students and their families

* Assist the Community Coordinator in planning Saturday's Baltimore field trip

* Manage Sunday studio time (12-5 pm) logistics

Staff Collaboration & Training

* Work with program coordinators to facilitate training for undergraduate staff

* Deliver training to the program Faculty

* Host weekly meetings with Teaching Assistants

* Supervise Teaching Assistants to ensure program goals are met

* Schedule undergraduate staff members for weekly Staff Talk presentations

* Make necessary paper copies for classes, orientation, and move-in/out

* Assist in managing/resolving issues related to facilities, submitting work orders, communicating with campus security, etc.

Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree; preferably in Fine Arts, Art History, Art Education, or Arts Administration

* Experience managing college-level staff

* High school or college teaching experience preferred

* Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with efficiency

* Familiarity with campus resources
