Summer Program Teacher – STEM (Junior Academy at Mass Academy)

Program OverviewThe Junior Academy at Mass Academy is a two‑week summer program for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students from diverse backgrounds. The day program provides academic enrichment and support through hands‑on STEM projects, literacy and math support, and visits to the WPI campus to tour labs and meet researchers. Students will gain confidence, curiosity, and engagement, and see science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as accessible and rewarding career paths.

Teaching ScheduleProgram hours: 8:00AM – 3:30PM. Includes one hour of planning time and daily meetings.
Responsibilities- Teach a STEM‑related course to middle school students using engaging project‑ and/or inquiry‑based methods while building technical skills and addressing learning gaps.
- Create and maintain a positive learning environment for all students; enforce program rules fairly and consistently.
- Assess student progress toward learning targets and differentiate instruction to meet individual academic needs.
- Develop a project‑based course curriculum that aligns with the goals of the Junior Academy program.
- Maintain up‑to‑date lesson plans and materials for the two‑week summer STEM course.
- Actively participate in Junior Academy team meetings.
- Collaborate with other Junior Academy staff, including teaching assistants assigned to the course.
- Effectively communicate with parents, students, and staff.
- Participate in other aspects of the Junior Academy program (e.g., morning meeting and team building activities).
- Participate in mandatory training for all staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Background in teaching STEM topics and a passion for supporting all learners through a culturally responsive lens.
- Bachelor’s degree required;
Master’s degree or higher preferred. - Massachusetts DESE licensure, or the ability to meet the licensure requirements, preferred.
- Experience mentoring and/or teaching students from diverse backgrounds preferred.
- Experience working with middle school students preferred.
- Ability to work collaboratively and embody Mass Academy’s mission and core values.
