Responsibilities
  • Plan, develop, implement, and monitor individualized education programs, provide appropriate specialized educational instruction, and work closely with general educators to ensure continuity of services for students with disabilities.
  • Direct instructional services to students with disabilities based on their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Assess individual students with disabilities for the purpose of preparing and implementing individual educational programs.
  • Develop, adapt, modify, and individualize educational materials, resources, techniques, methods, and strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities within the City Schools' curriculum framework.
  • Maintain appropriate records and document progress of special education students in both special and regular education programs based on established instructional objectives.
  • Assume responsibility for appropriate student behavior, establish and maintain effective discipline and management procedures.
  • Evaluate academic and social progress of special education students on a continuous basis.
  • Serve as a member of the school IEP Team committee as appropriate.
  • Work with parents of special education students to ensure ongoing communication and instructional support.
  • Coordinate instructional activities and collaborate with other professional staff, both school and non‑school based, to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Assign work to and oversee aides, parent and student volunteers where applicable.
  • Ensure classroom and instructional environments are attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning, with materials in good condition and accessible to students.
  • Support or participate in school‑wide student activities, social events, and approved fundraising activities.
  • Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas, intervene to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to administrators as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate competence in subject fields pertinent to instruction of students with disabilities.
  • Use both traditional and innovative instructional methodologies with various sub‑groups of students with disabilities.
  • Serve as a model for special education students in written and oral English.
  • Communicate and analyze the special education program effectively.
  • Participate in in‑service training, staff development activities, and staff meetings as required or assigned.
  • Promote activities in compliance with equal employment and non‑discrimination policies, and follow federal, state, school board, and professional standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • Required: Valid educator license in infant/primary special education (birth‑grade
    3) or eligibility for a conditional license in special education (Bachelor's degree with 6 credits in math, 6 credits in science, 6 credits in English, 6 credits in history, a C or better and an overall GPA of 2.5 or better).
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or institution.
  • Knowledge of federal laws protecting the educational services for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of the instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
  • Ability to select instructional planning, management, and evaluation procedures that relate to student needs and the instructional environment.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents.
  • Ability to move about the room to check student work and monitor behavior.
  • Preferred:
    Knowledge of the school's program of studies related to assignments, mission, goals, and organization.
