Position: Summer Peer Mentors - Mayor's Scholar Program (MSP)

Summer Peer Mentor

Summer Peer Mentors support the Mayor's Scholars Program to promote a positive and successful learning experience for students. To increase student retention, success, and completion, peer mentors will provide a high level of customer service and support to students in the Mayor's Scholars Program. Peer Mentors bring the knowledge and skills necessary to assist individuals through the application of positive behaviors, helping students become academically successful.

This position provides academic support, skill development, and case-management services to help students transition successfully from high school to college. Peer Mentors work closely with faculty, staff, tutors, and program leadership to promote student engagement, persistence, and readiness for the fall semester.

To support students of the Mayor's Scholars Program (MSP) for successful completion of the summer program, including mentoring and advising.

  • Plan and lead activities designed to strengthen college readiness, wellness, and teamwork for the collective.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide daily academic mentoring in reading, writing, math, and programming specific coursework.
  • Culturally competency awareness to relate and connect to a diverse population and analyze problems, identify solutions and take appropriate action; resolve problems using independent judgment and decision-making processes.
  • The ability to monitor student progress through assignments, assessments, and attendance through Canvas, our college's learning management system.
  • Plan and facilitate small-group study sessions and skill-building workshops.
  • Assist with daily program operations, including check-in, supervision of activities, and event support.
  • Collaborate with tutors, advisors, and faculty to ensure students receive timely academic interventions
  • Ability to multitask, organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with attention to detail.
  • Ability to conduct workshops, seminars, and training.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to the team environment.
  • Ability to collect and use data analyses to summarize information and develop insight into the effectiveness of various intervention strategies.
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions, and team debriefs throughout the program period.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse student populations and maintain confidentiality.
  • At least two years of experience in advising, coaching, or counseling young adult learners in an educational setting; OR recent personal collegiate experience
  • Experience working with high school or college aged students in an educational, mentoring, or advising capacity.
  • Knowledge of current technology (word processing, databases, presentations, and spreadsheet software) including Microsoft Office applications, internet savvy, and social media applications.
  • Ability to manage a caseload of 60-90 students, which includes but is not limited to:
    • Identifying student needs, academic readiness, and potential barriers to success.
    • Regular monitoring of grades, attendance, and assignment completion, especially for credit-bearing courses.
    • Mentoring students in study habits, time management, and navigating college systems.
    • Pairings with appropriate resources to provide academic and social-emotional guidance (re: tutoring, mental health support, disability services, etc.).
    • Acting as a liaison between the student, instructors, and parents if necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Three years of experience providing college access and retention services to recent high school graduates, who are first generation college students.
  • Bilingual (English - Spanish) communication skills.
