Elective Instructor
Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) is accepting applications for the part-time position of Elective Instructor. Upward Bound Math and Science Program (UBMS) is a federally funded grant program that serves first-generation, underserved high school students. This pre-college program was developed to strengthen the math and science skills of high-school students to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The UBMS Elective Course Instructors are expected to teach one section of an elective subject/course (such as media art, creative writing, art therapy, physical education, study skills, financial literacy, career development/exploration, etc.) The Elective Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing instructional activities that promote student learning in elective subjects. The teacher will create a positive learning environment, facilitate engaging and hands-on lessons, and support student's personal and academic growth.
The Upward Bound Math and Science Elective Course Instructors are responsible for assisting students in developing academic and social skills needed to be successful in high school, college, personally, and professionally. Elective Course Instructors are responsible for:
- Capable of strategizing and executing activities with optimal efficiency and impact.
- Create a focused environment of fairness and respect that encourages students to take risks and strive to reach goals.
- Communicate and enforce high expectations and standards for behavior and academic performance aligned with the BCCC Upward Bound Math and Science Program standards to create a strong culture of achievement and respect.
- Communicate regularly with Upward Bound staff about classroom needs, student performance, etc.
- Maintain comprehensive records of student attendance and daily progress throughout the creation of the final project.
** This position is part-time**
Education:
Bachelor's degree required.
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience teaching experience in a Specialty (Elective) or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in the Elective area or related field.
- Three (3) years of Teaching experience in the Elective area which must include the following:
- Serving diverse populations.
- Prescribed curriculum that is student-centered and project based.
- Teaching methods to address student learning styles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge and basic understanding of current technology.
- Ability to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results, and prescribe actions for improvement.
- Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment to learn.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with participants, staff, and community stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing with students, parents, and others.
