Teacher – Carpentry/Construction, Harford Technical High School, Harford, United States (On-site).

Position Summary

To create a safe atmosphere conducive to learning and to implement instruction that allows all students to learn. Provides instructional and leadership services to prepare students for careers in carpentry and related construction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plans, prepares, and delivers instruction that facilitates active learning and provides appropriate learning experiences for all students.
  • Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings.
  • Manages student behavior by establishing and enforcing classroom, school, and district expectations and procedures.
  • Assigns and grades class work, homework, assessments, and assignments.
  • Establishes, communicates, monitors, and evaluates clear outcomes for students.
  • Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
  • Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of children.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through ongoing professional development activities.
  • Maintains and updates all appropriate records completely and accurately as required by laws, district policies, and/or school practices.
  • Attends and participates in department/grade level, school, district, and parent meetings, and serves on special committees.
  • Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, technology, materials, and facilities.
  • Monitors the progress of individual students and uses information to adjust teaching strategies accordingly.
  • Provides appropriate feedback on student progress to students and parents in a timely manner.
  • Reacts to change productively.
  • Provides instruction and course/program management at the high school level in areas of residential and commercial construction related to National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification.
  • Obtains NCCER program certification including documentation and verification of students’ skills to NCCER curriculum content standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and implements a hands‑on approach to critical thinking and problem‑solving skills needed for current and future construction industry employment standards.
  • Works with employers and community groups to promote and advance technical skills.
  • Performs other work‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Hold or be eligible for a teaching certificate from the Maryland State Department of Education.
  • Three to five years of industry‑related work experience for state and NCCER certification in carpentry.
  • Experience in one or more of the major areas of construction with an emphasis on carpentry skill sets.
  • Classroom instruction and pedagogy experience.
  • Strong human relations skills and the ability to maintain relationships and open communications with business partners and other stakeholders to identify real‑world applications of content.
  • Effective organization and communication skills.
  • Flexibility in program implementation strategies.
  • Skills in preparing, implementing lesson plans, and instructing students.
  • Skill in communicating with students, their parents, administrators, and others.
  • Skill in supervising students and managing behavior.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.

    Environmental Conditions:

    Work requires the ability to bend, stand, and walk in the carpentry laboratory for extended periods of time on a daily basis.
Licensing & Certification Requirements

The applicant must meet Maryland licensure requirements for Professional Technical Education and Specialized Areas for Fine Arts (Grades 7-12) as outlined by COMAR §13A.
