Position: Urban Ecology and Sustainability Educator Living Classrooms Foundation Learning By Doing

Urban Ecology and Sustainability Educator

Year‑round, in‑person, permanent, full‑time exempt position. Salary: $40,000‑45,000 per year.

Baltimore Urban Gardening with Students (BUGS) is an after‑school and summer environmental education program that serves 6th‑8th‑grade students at The Crossroads School. The educator will lead the program’s hands‑on, nature‑based learning to build students’ environmental literacy and civic engagement.

The program emphasizes urban ecology, watershed stewardship, sustainability, and environmental justice through STEAM‑style lessons, field trips, and student‑led projects.

Core Responsibilities
  • Participate in the BUGS Annual Student‑Run Farmer’s Market, held on Saturdays.
  • Care for the campus chickens, including coop maintenance.
  • Plan and deliver environmental education lessons on habitats, watersheds, urban ecosystems, and climate resilience.
  • Collaborate with other BUGS educators on joint lesson plans.
  • Maintain equipment and program spaces: outdoor classroom, pollinator gardens, oyster cages, and other campus ecosystems.
  • Coordinate program events such as field trips, guest speakers, and the Farmer’s Market.
  • Guide students in producing goods for the Farmer’s Market, such as candles and other hand‑crafted products.
  • Plan and lead a 6‑week summer enrichment program.
  • Organize monthly hikes and activities for the Adventure Club.
  • Work with students to design and implement action projects based on local environmental issues.
