Job Summary:Assists Cadet Coordinator with oversight and coordination of cadet program, which involves 35‑50 18–20‑year‑old Baltimore Police Department employees who rotate through various Baltimore Police Department assignments, take two college courses per semester, attend at least one training day per month, and, if necessary, take driving lessons to obtain their Maryland driver’s license. When cadets approach age 20½ they go through the police officer application process and, if successful, enroll in the police academy.
Essential Functions:- Provide orientation to newly hired cadets. Liaise with BPD supervisors throughout the agency to identify cadet assignments, assign cadets, rotate cadets periodically, and obtain cadet evaluations from supervisors.
- Liaise with Baltimore City community college staff to assist cadets with initial application and course registration each semester.
- Organize cadet training days each month, including securing classrooms/facilities, speakers, and facilitators.
Approve cadet time in Workday. Mentor cadets on their journey to becoming police officer trainees and then police officers.
Minimum Qualifications:Education: Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
AND
Experience: Have one year of experience in teaching, advising, coaching and/or mentoring young adults.
OR
Equivalency Notes: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of educating and training adults.
- Knowledge of instructional design principles, techniques, materials and resources.
- Knowledge of the organization and formats of training courses.
- Knowledge of commonly utilized business software programs.
- Skill in teaching, coaching, and mentoring young adults.
- Skill in the utilization of common business software programs.
- Ability to motivate others to improve job skills, knowledge and behaviors.
- Ability to promote training programs.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to evaluate training programs and modify as needed.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint and must be successfully completed.
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory one-month probation.
