Introduction
The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. This is an 11-month position. Shift hours are Monday through Friday (12:00 AM - 8:00 AM).

Main Purpose of the JobThe RCYCP Supervisor provides supervisory level work over staff providing guidance to deaf and hard of hearing students. The supervisor serves as a mentor and role model, offers advice and assistance with everyday life skills, and provides referrals to other staff as appropriate.
Position DutiesThe supervisor is responsible for creating work schedules for staff, including substitutes when necessary, and for special events such as weekend tournaments and snow days. Responsibilities include coordinating field trips, vehicle reservations, and food service requests, reviewing and approving staff timesheets and overtime requests, liaising between the school and parents/guardians, and working with specialists regarding students’ physical or emotional needs. The supervisor conducts building inspections, reports maintenance issues, maintains inventory records, assesses emergency and crisis situations, and provides interim emergency medical assistance.
The supervisor conducts staff evaluations twice per year, attends Employee Performance Review meetings as needed, and participates in staff meetings with the school management team and dorm staff. The supervisor creates, executes, and maintains documentation of staff training for regular development to meet DHS and MDH requirements and performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Life.
- Eight years of experience, including four years providing guidance to deaf and hard of hearing youth and assisting them with everyday life skills in a residential setting, and one year of supervisory experience.
- An additional four years of experience working in a residential program.
- Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Deaf Education, Special Education or the Human Science field and four years of experience providing guidance to deaf and hard of hearing youth and assisting them with everyday life skills in a residential setting for the required experience.
- Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for each year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience within a Student Life/Residential program.
- Experience with in a Student Life/Residential program.
- Employees in this classification will be required to obtain and maintain RCYCP certification.
- Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
- Employees in this classification will be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid training leading to certification. These certifications must be kept current as a requirement of residential child care licensure by the Maryland Department of Human Services.
- Employees in this classification are required to be proficient in American Sign Language and in written English.
- Employees in this classification will be required to pass a medical examination and an annual screening for tuberculosis as a requirement of residential child care licensure by the Maryland Department of Human Services.
- Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
- Employees in this classification will be required to apply for a criminal background check as a requirement of the Family Law Article, Section 5-551, Annotated Code of Maryland.
- Employees in this classification are required to be certified by the State Board for the Certification of Residential Child Care Program Professionals (the Board) within the first 180 of employment.
- Employees in this classification will be required to be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid training leading to certification. These certifications must be kept current as a requirement of residential child care licensure by the Maryland Department of Human Services.
- Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.
