Nursing Peer Tutor

The Nursing Peer Tutor supports student success in BCCC's nursing programs by providing structured individual and small-group tutoring under faculty or program supervision. The tutor reinforces previously taught course content, helps students strengthen clinical reasoning and study skills, and connects students with appropriate academic resources. The tutor serves as a positive role model and promotes independent learning; the position does not replace faculty instruction, academic advising, skills-lab validation, or clinical supervision.

• Provide scheduled individual and small-group tutoring in assigned nursing courses and content areas.
• Reinforce concepts already presented by nursing faculty using approved course resources, terminology, and methods.
• Help students develop effective study plans, note-taking approaches, test-preparation strategies, dosage-calculation practice habits, and clinical-judgment reasoning.
• Guide students through practice questions and case-based learning without completing graded work or giving answers to active quizzes, examinations, assignments, or clinical paperwork.
• Encourage students to explain their reasoning, identify knowledge gaps, use reliable resources, and become increasingly independent learners.
• Maintain accurate records of tutoring dates, attendance, duration, general topics addressed, and referrals; submit documentation as directed by the supervisor.
• Communicate patterns of student need, resource concerns, or attendance issues to the supervisor without disclosing unnecessary personal information.
• Refer students to faculty, the Nursing Skills Laboratory, advising, counseling, disability support, or other college services when needs exceed the tutor's role.
• Attend required orientation, training, meetings, and periodic performance check-ins.
• Maintain a professional, respectful, inclusive, and encouraging learning environment and perform other tutoring-related duties as assigned.

• Tutors may reinforce previously taught content but may not independently teach new course content, evaluate student performance, validate clinical or laboratory competencies, or provide clinical supervision.
• Tutors may not complete, edit for submission, or provide answers to graded assignments, care plans, quizzes, examinations, ATI assessments, or other evaluated work.
• Tutors may not share, reproduce, solicit, or retain secure testing materials or other restricted course content.
• Tutors must not provide medical advice or direct patient-care guidance. Questions involving clinical safety, policy interpretation, grades, accommodations, or faculty decisions must be referred to the appropriate faculty member or office.
• Student information and tutoring discussions must be kept private and handled in accordance with FERPA, college policy, and nursing-program expectations.
• Tutors must report suspected academic-integrity concerns, safety concerns, harassment, discrimination, or other serious issues to the supervisor promptly.

• Arrives on time, prepared, and ready to provide the scheduled tutoring service.
• Uses respectful, student-centered communication and adapts explanations without lowering academic or professional standards.
• Submits complete and timely session records and communicates absences or scheduling conflicts promptly.
• Accepts coaching, participates in training, and consistently follows faculty guidance and program procedures.

• Current BCCC student in good academic and conduct standing and eligible for the applicable student-employment funding source.
• Successful completion of the nursing course(s) or content area(s) to be tutored.
• Recommended or approved by a nursing faculty member or nursing-program administrator.
• Demonstrated knowledge of foundational nursing concepts, safe practice principles, and effective study strategies.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organization, dependability, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work a reliable 5-10 hours per week and follow the established tutoring schedule and documentation process.
• Ability to maintain student privacy, academic integrity, and professional boundaries.

• Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and strong performance in the nursing courses to be supported.
• Prior tutoring, mentoring, peer-leadership, or healthcare experience.
• Familiarity with Canvas, ATI, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and other learning technologies used by the nursing programs.
