OverviewWe are seeking a Mid-Level Highway Engineer to join our transportation practice in Baltimore, supporting the delivery of roadway and multimodal projects across Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region. This role is ideal for an experienced highway or roadway engineer ready to take on a project-lead capacity.
This position combines hands-on design and emerging leadership. You will lead roadway design tasks, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to projects impacting safety, mobility, and urban connectivity in the Baltimore metro area.
The Opportunity
Baltimore is a critical hub for transportation investment and infrastructure modernization. In this role, you will support MDOT SHA and local agency projects involving major corridors, interchanges, and urban complete streets initiatives. You'll work in a collaborative environment with exposure to high-visibility projects and a clear path toward increased responsibility.
Responsibilities- Lead the development and delivery of roadway design tasks for MDOT SHA and public-sector clients.
- Prepare and review geometric designs, including horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, and cross sections.
- Support the production and quality control of PS&E packages, including plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Ensure compliance with MDOT SHA standards, AASHTO, FHWA, and applicable design criteria.
- Coordinate with internal traffic, drainage, environmental, and utility teams, as well as subconsultants.
- Perform detailed technical reviews to maintain quality, accuracy, and constructability.
- Manage task-level scopes, schedules, and deliverables with limited supervision.
- Mentor designers and EITs while assuming increasing project leadership responsibilities.
- Coordinate with DOT reviewers and project stakeholders as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Maryland.
- 11 to 15 years of experience in highway or roadway engineering.
- Working knowledge of MDOT SHA Roadway Design Guide, Book of Standards, and Standard Specifications.
- Proficiency with roadway design software, including Open Roads Designer and Micro Station.
- Experience transitioning projects from V8i to ORD is a plus.
- Ability to lead technical design tasks with minimal oversight.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with urban roadway and multimodal design.
- Multi-project or task-lead coordination experience.
