Systems Engineer, Architect / Sr. Architect
We are seeking a Sr. Planner, Architecture & Security who will serve as an in-house authority on planning efforts and planning solutions for university Real Estate, Plant Operations, and Design & Construction units, division representatives, other stakeholders, and with outside consultants to ensure design and construction work conforms to university standards and sound planning practice. Additionally, the Senior Planner, Architecture & Security will work closely with JHPS/JHPD personnel, routinely engaging with the department's IT team, Operations team, and Leadership, including the Vice President and Chief of Police.
Responsibilities include project leadership of feasibility studies and conceptual design for exploration/validation of a project for presentation to Trustees, leadership and guidance for procurement of design consultants; advisory participation throughout the planning and design process; owner review of programming, planning, and design prepared for the university by outside consultants; and development of policies, procedures, standards, and process improvements. The Senior Planner, Architecture & Security with the JHFRE/Design & Construction department's project managers, who are responsible for overall management of projects authorized by JHFRE Leadership, Senior Leadership, and Trustees.
University project clients include a broad constituency of JHU Deans, Vice Provosts, Department Chairs, Faculty, Researchers, Senior Administrators, and Trustees. The Senior Planner, Architecture & Security will collaborate with JHPS/JHPD personnel and leadership, as well as other unit architects and engineers to provide comprehensive oversight of issues regarding planning, design, adherence to best industry practices, and adherence to JHU Guidelines and Standards throughout all phases of project delivery.
Beyond JHPS/JHPD assignments, the Senior Planner, Architecture & Security may be asked to initiate and execute programming and planning efforts in support of Capital Plan development and implementation, as well as strategic campus plan development and implementation in support of overall campus development (i.e. storm water management master plan, maintenance investments, accessibility planning, sustainability initiatives for campus, space utilization, space standards, classroom design, laboratory design, etc.).
The Senior Planner will work closely with the Design and Construction (D&C) project manager to provide high-quality and responsive client/user service to support the effort through all phases.
- Provide in-house "subject matter expertise" for programming, planning, and design associated with the placement of field assets associated with security, surveillance, analytics, and implementation of law enforcement facilities JH enterprise wide.
- Work closely with the JHPS/JHPD team to orchestrate mapping and cataloging of existing conditions, and work with in-house JHPS personnel, outside consultants, and vendors to locate and document updates to field assets through JH's GIS.
- Working knowledge and understanding of the terminology of surveillance, security, analytics, and law enforcement systems and facilities.
- Working closely with JHPS/JHPD, develop and formalize Guidelines and Standards for projects involving surveillance, security, and law enforcement.
- Provide in-house "subject matter expertise" for long-term planning for sites currently owned or leased by the university and sites being considered for purchase or lease.
- Provide in-house "subject matter expertise" for high-level building planning efforts, including planning for renovation and repurposing existing assets for new and future uses.
- Be a JHU in-house resource for areas required for specific uses and area calculations involving Acreage, travel distance, NSF, NASF, and GSF ratios for all higher education space typologies.
