Primary Purpose

The Section Engineer of Gas Transmission Engineering role provides technical leadership for the planning, design and execution of complex gas transmission projects on BGE’s system. This role involves managing complex, innovative gas transmission initiatives that are critical to gas system reliability, compliance and integrity management. Additionally, this role provides direct expertise and oversight for BGE’s gas transmission MAOP Program and TIMP programs, and mentors and develops junior engineers on the Gas Transmission Engineering Team.

Knowledge/Experience Needed For This Role
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex gas transmission systems, projects and designs
  • 7+ years of professional engineering experience, or 6+ with a Master’s degree or Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Preferred:
    Lead Responsible Engineer experience with large gas construction projects
  • Preferred:
    Detailed knowledge of gas regulations including DOT 192 code and BGE Gas Engineering Standards

May be required to work extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.

Primary Duties
  • Lead highly technical consultation and training through OJT/OJE (may include some classroom instruction) on highly complex and unique technical areas requiring advanced engineering principles and knowledge of complex analog and digital field test equipment. (25%)
  • Lead the work activities of project teams and others on the implementation of large specialized technical projects and/or programs to develop studies, proposals, and commissioning plans that support safely energizing and placing major utility and customer systems and equipment on the system. (25%)
  • Perform assignments while acting independently; may lead multi-discipline teams and provide direct oversight of contractors. (15%)
  • Participate in department/project management planning and monitor performance for the accomplishment of committed results. (10%)
  • Provide detailed technical training, mentorship, peer review, and/or guidance to others. (10%)
  • May participate in technical and industry societies and committees to enhance knowledge of new technologies or issues within the area of company interest, serving as an expert in a specialized area. (5%)
  • Act as an expert witness and provide expert opinions for internal committees or as required. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline with at least 7 years of professional engineering experience.
  • Completed assignments and projects demonstrating:
    • Ability to analyze and interpret complex gas transmission systems, projects and designs.
    • Knowledge and ability to apply problem‑solving approaches and engineering theory.
    • Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices.
    • Advanced knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles.
    • Advanced knowledge of the latest technologies necessary to perform a variety of specialized or complex assignments for various installation types of services.
  • Notes: A limited number of personnel possess the required knowledge, ability and experience. A Master’s degree in Engineering reduces the OJT requirement by one year. A PE license reduces the OJT requirement by one year. The maximum experience reduction is one year.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree or graduate‑level work in Engineering, Business Administration or Project Management certification.
  • Possess Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification and/or Professional Engineer license.
  • 1–3 years of professional supervisory experience or demonstrated ability to lead the work activity of others.
  • Strong written and oral communication, presentation, report generation and technical writing skills.
