This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. The role supports a collaborative project investigating the seismic performance of low-damage rocking structural systems. The successful researcher will conduct research evaluating performance benefits, influencing ground motion selection, and developing design guidelines and technologies.
Research
Title:
Low-Damage Rocking Structures
- Conduct parametric studies of rocking and conventional buildings to identify influential ground motion characteristics and demand parameters.
- Develop nonlinear structural models and evaluate conventional and low-damage systems.
- Develop design guidelines for low-damage structural systems to promote wider use.
- Develop and test new low-damage technologies focused on implementation.
- Create a structural component database utilizing experimental testing expertise and programming skills.
- Evaluate the cost-benefits of rocking systems across a range of seismic hazards and building types.
- U.S. Citizenship preferred.
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering with focus on Earthquake Engineering.
- Extensive experience in nonlinear modeling using Open Sees.
- Programming expertise in Python, MATLAB, and Tcl.
- Familiarity with performance-based seismic design.
- Expertise in rocking structural systems and low-damage systems, including publications demonstrating modeling ability.
- Experience in large-scale structural testing, component testing, and shake-table testing.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
