McLean Contracting Company is seeking Field Engineers (multiple openings) to join our growing team in the Baltimore, MD and Chesapeake, VA regions. Field Engineers are part of on-site management and are responsible for various aspects of each project while working closely with Project Superintendents to ensure all projects are successfully completed safely, timely and on budget. Primarily, a person in this position will report to a jobsite field office, whose location may require regional travel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform engineering duties in planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of heavy civil marine structures including reading and interpreting drawings and specifications; performing complex geometrical and mathematical calculations; and performing layout and surveying. Duties include assisting in project administration, cost estimating, change orders. construction planning, site layout, means and methods, scheduling, material procurement, subcontracting, quality control, and job site safety;
coordinating, monitoring, and documenting the work of subcontractors; providing and maintaining horizontal and vertical survey control by use of a level, GPS, total station, etc., including organized documentation of survey notes and coordination with the Regional Surveyor; engaging in the design of temporary structures, formwork, and falsework design in coordination with Structural Engineer; performing quantity tracking (including calculations) and cost coding for purposes of productivity analysis and accurate job cost forecasting;
initiating progress and final payments with owners and subcontractors; preparing daily reports of project progress and issues; providing document control for correspondence, submittals, RFIs, etc.; assisting in the preparation of final records for the project, including as-builts; utilizing CPM scheduling and providing schedule updates; working with foremen to ensure structures are built in conformance with the contract requirements; utilizing strong problem-solving capabilities and working within a management team to ensure projects meet, safety, schedule, and budget goals;
integrating safety rules, policies, and practices in all work elements; championing continuous improvement in all areas, including safety, operations, and cost control; representing the company in an ethical and professional manner at various progress meetings, partnering sessions, joint venture meetings, conferences, and industry functions as required; supporting and communicating Company Purpose, Vision, and Values to employees and basing decisions on these concepts;
exercising strategic thinking and leadership in pursuit of company goals; utilizing strong organizational skills with an attention to detail and accuracy and ability to multitask and manage priorities in a fast paced construction environment; utilizing excellent interpersonal skills, as well as effective verbal, listening, communication, organizational, and management skills; using computer software programs, such as Word, Excel (expert-level), Heavy Job, and Viewpoint;
communicating and implementing company policies and procedures to personnel as outlined in the Employee Handbook; fully utilizing the McLean Way of project performance on all projects; communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, up and down the chain of command and with customers, subcontractors, suppliers, government agencies, and outside stakeholders.
Education and/or Experience:
Position requires (1) Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or civil engineering technology.
(2) Must have completed an internship (at least 350 hours) in the heavy (highways, bridges, airports, marine, etc.) or commercial/institutional (hospitals, schools, etc.) construction field, including change orders, project scheduling, layout, and/or estimating.
(3) Must complete standard background check and drug and alcohol screening prior to hire and be willing to submit to random drug and alcohol testing after hire.
