We are seeking a hands-on Controller to lead and actively manage the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This role requires a "player-coach" who is comfortable working in the details while also providing strategic financial oversight. The Controller will ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with nonprofit regulations, while supporting leadership with timely and actionable financial insights.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Operations
* Manage the full-cycle accounting function, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and reconciliations
* Oversee and actively participate in month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
* Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
* Maintain accurate financial records and ensure all transactions are properly recorded and supported
Budgeting & Financial Planning
* Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting activities
* Monitor budget-to-actual performance and provide variance analysis to leadership
* Support program teams in managing grant budgets and restricted funds
Compliance, Audit & Controls
* Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations, including IRS Form 990 support and funder requirements
* Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls and financial policies
* Serve as primary liaison for external auditors, leading audit preparation and execution
* Ensure timely and accurate filing of tax-related documents and regulatory reports
Reporting & Leadership Support
* Deliver timely financial reports, dashboards, and analysis to executive leadership and the Board
* Provide insights to support strategic decision-making and organizational performance
* Present financial results to non-financial stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
Team Leadership & Process Improvement
* Supervise and mentor accounting staff while remaining highly engaged in daily operations
* Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and reporting efficiency
* Document financial workflows to improve consistency, transparency, and audit readiness
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
* 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit accounting experience
* Strong understanding of GAAP and fund/restricted accounting
* Experience with audits, financial reporting, and internal controls
* Hands-on experience with accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, Net Suite, Quick Books, or similar)
* Advanced Excel skills and strong financial analysis capabilities
* CPA preferred
