MVA Police Officer II
OPEN RECRUITMENT

Applicants must attach a copy of an active Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) card when submitting an application.

Current vacancies exist only in Anne Arundel and St. Mary's Counties.

The Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) Office of Investigations and Security Services is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Officer II. Police Officer II is the full performance level of law enforcement work and performs the full range of duties with complete independence. Employees are subject to call‑in duty during emergencies and staffing shortages and will work a rotating shift.

Employees will be required to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Employees are required to carry firearms and to demonstrate, on a periodic basis, practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms.

Responsibilities
  • Enforcing laws, rules, and regulations governing the safety and protection of personnel and State property.
  • Perform safety, patrol, and security duties in a motor vehicle or on foot.
  • Respond to disturbances and emergencies.
  • Issue warnings or summons and make arrests.
  • Investigate accidents and criminal acts.

Note:

MVA Police Officers are subject to the Transportation Services Human Resources System (TSHRS) Policies and Procedures. They are not afforded any rights under the Maryland Police Officer Accountability Act and/or Law Enforcement Officers' Bill of Rights (LEO ).

Employees will be required to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Employees in this classification receive general supervision under a Police Officer Supervisor or Police Chief.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification: Education:
High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience:

Six (6) months of experience as a certified law enforcement officer. Applicants must have completed all training components as required by the MPCTC.

Notes:

  • The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
  • Licenses & Certifications
  • Candidates must possess police officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application.
  • Applicants formerly certified within the past three years who are eligible for recertification at the time of appointment meet the certification requirement.
  • Employees may be required to possess or obtain a special police commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-209.

    Special Requirements:

  • Selection standards for police officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207. These criteria are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations  and include:
    • U.S. Citizenship
    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history
    • Oral interview
    • Physical examination
    • Possession of a driver's license valid in the state of Maryland.

    2. Employees are subject to call‑in 24‑hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

    3. Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
