Introduction
The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) supports State and local government agencies, as well as local non‑profit organizations and the citizens of Maryland, by providing facilities management, real estate and surplus property services, and security and law enforcement for State buildings. DGS also manages facilities engineering, design and construction services, oversees approximately $1 billion in annual contract administration, and administers the State procurement process.

A Police Officer II enforces laws, rules, and regulations to ensure the safety and protection of personnel and State property. Officers in this classification are not supervisory and receive general supervision from a Police Officer Sergeant. Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night, or rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends, and are considered Emergency Essential personnel. Candidates must complete a Pre‑Employment Physical and substance abuse screening.
PositionDuties
- Enforce laws, rules, and regulations governing the protection of personnel and State property.
- Direct vehicular traffic, enforce parking regulations, investigate accidents, and issue warnings and citations.
- Prepare clear, concise, and accurate incident reports in accordance with agency directives and standard operating procedures.
- Investigate criminal acts to resolve and/or prosecute criminal activity.
- Make arrests and testify in court.
- Render emergency and/or first aid to sick or injured persons; stabilize injured persons prior to ambulance response.
- Respond to disturbances, emergencies, suspicious persons, and suspicious activities.
- Perform other functions that enable the agency to fulfill its mission to provide law enforcement and physical security to DGS‑owned and managed properties.
- Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.
- Experience: Six months of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.
- Notes:
- The educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Public Safety Article, Section 3‑207, Annotated Code of Maryland.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non‑commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least two (2) years of experience as a Certified Law Enforcement Officer in Maryland.
- Former law enforcement officer certification in the last 3‑5 years or a current non‑Maryland officer who completed an acceptable entrance‑level academy in another state or through the federal government.
- Selection standards established by the Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3‑207, Annotated Code of Maryland. These include:
- U.S. citizenship
- Minimum age of 21 years
- Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history
- Oral interview
- Physical and psychological examinations, truth verification, and drug test (COMAR )
- Possession of a driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland
