The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is recruiting an MTA Special Police Officer, Trainee. The MTA Special Police Officer Trainee is the entry level of unarmed law enforcement personnel responsible for conducting security patrol and monitoring across all MTA transit system modes, facilities, administrative buildings, and other MTA owned properties, in a learning capacity. Employees in this classification serve as unarmed law enforcement personnel commissioned by the State of Maryland and granted law enforcement authority limited to MTA owned or controlled properties and revenue fleet.
The position supports the MTA Police Force in accordance with MDOT MTA rules, regulations, policies, governing State and Federal laws, and Collective Bargaining Agreement with AFSCME Local 1859. Employees in this classification do not supervise. Employees in this classification receive supervision from a Police Supervisor or other designated official.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Learn to patrol transit facilities and maintain visible security presence – this involves conducting routine patrols of stations, platforms, bus loops, rail cars, and MTA properties to deter crime, identify hazards, and maintain a safe environment.
- Learn to monitor, observe, and report safety or security incidents – this involves observing and promptly reporting criminal activity, threats, disturbances, and hazardous conditions to sworn MTA Police Force (MTAPF) Officers or dispatch.
- Learn to operate police equipment such as body worn cameras, handheld devices, portable two-way radio communication systems, fare enforcement tools and electronic fare verification devices, and personal protective equipment (PPE), etc.
- Learn to provide customer assistance and public engagement in accordance with MTA and MTA Police Force standards.
- Learn to conduct fare enforcement support activities – this involves assisting with fare checks, monitoring fare compliance, reporting violations to sworn personnel, and observing evasion behaviors.
- Learn to perform other job-related duties as assigned by Management.

Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate or a General Education Diploma (GED).

Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Candidates may be subject to a background investigation under Federal and State laws and regulations. A conviction is not an automatic disqualification to employment. Erroneous, misleading, or fraudulent information on the application is enough grounds for rejection from the hiring process, removal from the list of eligible, withdrawal of an offer for employment or immediate discharge.
- Employees in this classification may be subject to pre-employment drug testing and substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations 49 - Federal Department of Transportation Drug Alcohol Testing Protocols and Federal Transit Administration Alcohol Testing Rules, and Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
- Candidates must pass a physical agility test administered by the MTA Police Force.
- Candidates must possess a motor vehicle license valid in the State of Maryland.
- Candidates must be, at least, 18 years old.
Special Employment Requirements:
- Selected candidates must complete training and obtain the Maryland State Police Special Police Officer Certification.
- Employees in this classification are deemed essential personnel designated by MDOT MTA to be critical in maintaining the operations of the Department in times of significant service emergencies or adverse weather conditions.
