Overview
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) seeks Chaplains to fill current and future vacancies throughout Maryland. This role supports inmates’ spiritual needs across multiple faiths and requires impartial service to diverse religious groups within the prison population.
Location:
Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI), 30474 Revells Neck Rd, Westover, MD 21871. Grade: 15.
- Plan, develop, monitor, and maintain a program of workshop activities, study groups, administration of sacraments, holy day observances, and special programs to support inmates’ spiritual needs in accordance with agency directives.
- Provide assistance and guidance by circulating in housing units, setting up visitation schedules in housing areas, and responding to inmate request slips.
- Notify inmate populations of religious services and facilitate participation by posting monthly schedules.
- Contact inmates and their families to provide information and counseling related to illness, injury, or death in accordance with agency directives.
- Prepare reports as required by the Department.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. - Experience:
Two years of ministerial leadership experience following formal certification, or an acceptable equivalent experience, demonstrating a firm cleric identity. - Additional experience in spiritual counseling or other chaplaincy work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
- Additional graduate-level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours per year for the required general experience.
- Credit may be given for relevant part-time, temporary, or volunteer experience if hours per week are listed.
- Chaplains must possess current endorsement from a recognized denominational authority.
- Education obtained outside the United States requires proof of equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. All information used to determine qualifications must be submitted by the closing date, including foreign credential evaluations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Religious Studies, or Sacred Studies from an accredited institute.
- Two years of ministerial experience in a correctional or similar setting with diverse religious groups.
- Meet the required selection standards for correctional training (Code of Maryland Regulations 12/10/09): U.S. Citizenship or resident alien status; minimum age 21; completed background investigation; oral interview.
- Willingness to work with other religious groups outside of one’s own faith.
- Possess current Ecclesiastical/Religious endorsement meeting the standards of the respective Ecclesiastical/Religious group.
- Chaplain duties require a flexible work schedule to meet diverse operational and religious needs.
